Too Depressed to Be Around the Baby
Posted: 12-05-05 12:39pm

My daughter is due to have her first baby in april. She told me she would like me to snap out of my depression before the baby comes so my depression and negitivity doesn't rub off or influence the baby like it did her while she was growing up. My husband and I live with my daughter due to the fact that my husband suffered a stroke last august and I made a lot of quick decisions before thinking about the concequences. Any suggestions she wants me to watch the baby when she goes back to work after her maternity leave

Hi,

i doubt your daughter as ever suffered from depression herself - since she feels that depressed people can just snap out of the illness, when others want them to.

I would say that if she’s not happy with you being around the baby when you're depressed, then she should find an alternative carer for the baby. You can't just snap out of it and you are only going to become more depressed if you begin to stress and feel guilty, about the impact it might have on the baby.

In what ways are you coping with your depression?? Are you one medication, or receiving any counselling at all??

There are many ways to reduce depression such as a eating a healthy diet, exercise, doing something creative to express yourself - but the problem is that it can be very difficult to motivate yourself to do these things as they can take alot of effort for someone who is depressed. You could try making a list of things which may reduce depression, and try and make very small changes little by little so that it's not such a strain on you.

All the best

Depression

Thank you sad eyes for your input. I will try making a list, and you were right about feeling guilty because that has already started. My whole life I have been so out of control. I overeat, as food has always been a comfort for me. I never exercise the will power is just not there but I will try. Thanks again for caring enough to respond

That's good that you are going to try thinking about factors that could help improve the way you feel. I comfort eat also sometimes, but it only makes me feel worse afterwards, because I start worrying about whether I will gain weight afterwards.

Anyway i'm trying to make some changes also -
i have started taking vitamin supplements a few weeks back now i'm trying to improve my diet and after that when I feel I have more energy I will try taking up more exercise.

Let us know how you get on.
Take good care.

Maybe the baby will bring you out of the depression a lil too. Are you on meds? I am a new mom with a 5 1/2 month old and had bad depression grwoing up and wa s on all kinds of meds and stuff, I weaned myself off of them while I was preggo and had baby blues for a couple of weeks after but am totally fine now. I am off all my meds and am not depressed anymore either. My son has brought me a lot of happiness. I am exhausted cause he's a piggy and is still up every 3-4hours at night to eat but other than that he's great. I hope you can work everything out before the baby comes. My momlives onthe other side of the country and has not seen my son yet and that cause me alot of grief so I hope that does not happen with you all.

Are there reasons behind your depression? Liek the other poster said, make a list, see what they are and what you can do to about them. I wish you all the best of luck.

I am really trying very hard to pull myself out of depression. I am on medication lexapro and welbutrin and I also have other health issues as well. I am estatic about being a grandmother and I can't wait to hold the baby we found out yesterday it is going to be a girl. I am trying very hard to keep a positive attiude and a smile when my daughter comes home from work. Hopefully I will come out of it before the baby is born

i was on those too and they didn't help. Have they tried you on paxil? That's what finally helped me. Congrats on a girl too!! I wish you the best of luck.
