Would An Artificial Womb Be Possible?
Posted: 12-08-05 12:35pm

My view is that a woman has the right to control her body. That means, if she does not want to be pregnant, she should have the right to abort. At the same time, I can understand the view that the fetus may have its own right to live -- provided it does not compromise the woman's control over her body.

If the fetus could survive on its own, that would be fine -- just deliver it. However, we know that very few abortions take place after the point at which a fetus could survive outside the womb, and very few of those are for anything other than a threat to the woman's health. (handicaps and deformities can generally be picked up before 15 weeks, although some may only be seen on later ultrasound images accounting for additional late abortions.)

what I would suggest is that those who disapprove of abortion start funding the development of artificial wombs. Instead of destroying a fetus during an abortion, I would propose that it could be delivered, the woman released from all responsibility or "ownership", and placed in an artificial incubator -- the adopting parents, perhaps, could pay for the costs of the incubation. Maybe those fetuses aborted for deformity or handicap reasons could be "adopted" by donations from anti-abortion groups, who could also come up with homes for any that survived after "birth".

I'm guessing that some pregnant women would not be in favour of this, because they would feel it was the same as giving a baby up for adoption -- i.E. They don't know that it will go to a good family, they don't want to think that there is a child of theirs out there somewhere. But really, it would be not a lot different from being a sperm donor.

This plan would mean there was no destruction of embryos/fetuses, but also that women could end an unwanted pregnancy.

This is actually a good idea. Wonder if it will ever pan out.

Maybe you should propose it to the medical field, webmd or such. Lol

i'm serious though, this is a good idea. Everyone wins. I'm always in favor of no abortion.

I've posted before my support for this kind of idea. I really like it too.

how about better teach women that if they want to have sex and not be pregnant they should use birth control? Is it that impossible? I believe in treating the cure and not putting bandaids.

I became pregnant on an iud.. They are as effective as sterilization, and I still became pregnant. Fewer than 1 in 1,000 women become pregnant on them. I was using birth control, a super effective kind too.

well yeah it'd be lovely if everyone actually listened, but as was stated in another topic, many women who become pregnant and get abortions either can't pay for regular prevention, are so brainwashed into thinking that birth control doesn't work (by pro-lifers) so they don't bother, or can't read it, or don't take it right, etc...

That is very true that there is a risk of pregancy no matter what birth control method one uses. That's why I believe the ideal thing is abstinence until you are ready to afford/care a child. (i was abstinent until my 30's and I had bf's and beds available) but I reckon that not everybody likes the idea of being smart and have self control. I think that the number of abortions will always be reduced if at least they use birth control properly.

it will be, which is why I believe that continued and better sex education is the key, along with making birth control more available and cheaper.

Most definately. Birth control, and of course condoms, are the most important things women can do for themselves. I include natural family planning too for the catholics :) it is quite effective, and I realizenot everyone can use pills or hormones :)

I try and teach women about the importance of using contraception if they want to have sex, but not have children. I try and give women resources on where they can get birth control inexpensively and easily. I also try to give women support through the hard times. I believe wholeheartedly that birth control education is important, but some women are just undereducated. It is really sad, but many teens believe you cannot get pregnant "the first time"... There are also older women who do not have enough education to make wise decisions. I believe education is important for women.

don't get me wrong, your completely right, these woman should initially take responsiblity, but unfortunately they .D.O.N.T. Their irresponsible and on top of that, selfish, that is why they seek abortions. So for those morons, it would be nice to have artificial wombs. It's too bad but at least it will save a child's life, that is worth everything.

Oh dear .God, leave it to you two.

And tell me poo, why should a woman who takes care of her children be sterlized for having 2, 4, or 10? I know, I know, because she is "selfish" for wanting children right? Rah rah, yippity yah. Only in your hateful killing world. It's natural to have children. That is how population grows and we do not become extinct. Welcome to life....Tadaaa!!! Abortion is not natural, normal, nor good. It's inhumane, and wrong, and evil.

what!? A woman who has 2-10 wanted children should of course not be sterilized, as long as she not only cares for them, but can also adequetly support them. I don't care how much you love your 10 toddlers, if you're living in a cardboard box.

We are no where near becoming exctint, there are what, 6 billion of us? We can cut down on the reproduction, believe me.

uh, yea, ok.....Agreed.

That's fine about cutting down on reproduction. How about not becoming pregnant in the first place then? Duh.

that's what birth control is for, except that it's not perfect. Thus, you have the backup plan: abortion.

nope. Backup plan should not include killing the baby. Backup plan should be: deal with it and raise it as your own, because it is.

oh yes, just what we need -- women who do not have the resources or capability of looking after a kid, who don't want it. They should just raise it, uh huh, that's going to produce a lot more happy, well-adjusted people. Because being brought up by someone who would rather you had never been born is a great thing for a person.
