Gallbladder Removed Recently - Severe Weakness No - No Stone Posted: 12-08-05 20:56pm
Hi.
My mom had her gallbladder removed 4 weeks
ago. Ultrasounds by her doctor said many
stones so it had to come out.
Gallbladder was removed and nothing is
wrong with it - no stones !
For the past 2 weeks my mom (who is 67)
has had severe weakness and shakiness and
finds it very difficult to walk or go up
stairs. She is normally high energy.
Its not tiredness, its weakness. She
went for blood tests today and some
pancreas enzymes are high but everything
else is normal.
Anyone else with similar problems ? Why
were the stones misdiagnosed ? If it
wasn't her gallbladder, what was it ?

Well firstly, did you guys get a picture
of the ultrasound? I would go back to
that inital picture and take it to another
gi doc to look at. If there were stones
in the gb in the picture then there must
have been a flush involved. Did she do a
gb flush w/ olive oil??? It could be that
it got rid of all the stones. Another
thing is that they "assumed" (which a lot
of doctors do now a days) that she had
gallstones based on the symptoms provided
and her age.
If the gb was not the source of her
original complaint...(which is??? Let us
know) then other areas need to be looked
at. The weakness could be a sign of one
or two things:
surgery..What kind??? If it was
laproscopic then recovery time should be
better than the usual operation ( long
cut).
If long cut, then she is porbably weak
because of that . Also, I understand that
food goes through the body a lot faster w/
out the gb, perhaps nutrients and vitamins
are not being properly taken in by the
intestines.
If this be the case, I would try
purchesaing food enzymes. They are all
natural and aide in the digestion process.
Also, worst case scenerio...She is having
internal bleeding, but this can be ruled
out by taking her to the gi doctor and
have he/she look at it. Other than than,
it is not uncommon to be weak after a
surgery of any kind.
Hope this helps...

Thanks for the feedback. My mom was
taken by ambulance to the hospital this
morning. She was so weak she collapsed,
had difficulty breathing and wet herself.
They did the usual blood tests and
checked her heart but could find nothing
wrong with her at the hospital, so they
sent her home. She had the laparoptic
surgery about 3 weeks ago (in and out the
same day), and only started having the
weakness as of a week ago. No
temperature and blood pressure is fine.
They can find no reason for it. It is so
strange. She is eating okay but is quite
constipated, although not blocked-up or
anything because she is going a bit. I
told her to cleanse the bowels and see if
that makes any difference. She eats
healthy and does not eat large meals or
anything, she is only 5'1" and about 120
pounds.
As for the gallbladder that was removed.
She was getting stomach pains, nothing
really severe, the doc did an ultrasound
and said she had lots of stones and so it
had to be removed. They gave her a
surgery date within 2 weeks and she was in
and out in the same day. She didn't do a
cleansing beforehand. When the
gallbladder went to pathology afterwards
they said it was fine with no stones.
Her family doctor and the surgeon can't
explain it and they have ordered another
ultrasound for next week. Not sure what
they are looking for this time around.
But my mom is quite concerned that they
might have mixed up her results with
someone else and they took out a perfectly
good gall bladder and now she is suffering
complications.

Results mix up? I kinda doubt it. But I
find it cruel for the lady of her age to
be in and out the same day. I know how I
felt the day after the operation (it took
place at night). I was so weak, I could
hardly stand on my two feet. And I am 29.
Meaning, I have much more strenght than
she does. The best of luck, I hope she
recovers as soon as possible.

"her family doctor and the surgeon can't
explain it and they have ordered another
ultrasound for next week. Not sure what
they are looking for this time around."
have they checked her spleen?
Have this checked.
As far as the gb surgery goes, it could be
that he body is still adjusting to the
shock of it all. The body has to have
time to adjust w/out the organ, so it may
cause her whole body to feel weak. If all
vitals are okay, then I would trust she is
not in critical condition, but I would
suggest that she suppliment her diet w/
food enzymes. I would also have her take
this: it is called natural calm by peter
gilliam, and it is simply a powder form of
magnesium. Magnesium is crucial for the
body to function properly and all
metabolic processes depend on it. The
food enzymes will help her body better
digest the food so it it is better
received and used by the body. This
should get her strength back. Not to
mention it will help her get crucial
rest.
There could have been complications from
the surgery that are undetected as of now.
The ultrasound may show this along w/
other clues. If her problems did not
start until after the surgery, then I
would assume that it could be from the
surgery, but if she had "stomach pain"and
it was an ulcer of some kind that was
causing the pain, then it could very well
make her weak along w/ possible bleeding.
I would see if she still has the "pain" in
the stomach. This should have been looked
at prior to ultrasound. Stomach pain can
be an ulcer or gallbladder...The two
produce similar symptoms, usually you can
press on the stomach and immediately know
if it is an ulcer. It could have been
acid build up..Gerd.
Good luck! I hope she feels better soon.
Keeping her in my prayers :)

Re: Stomach Pains After Surgery Posted: 01-10-06 22:43pm
I doubt the sones passed naturally. I
hear the pain from that is excruciating.
I guess they could have passed during
surgery, while under anesthesia. A
mis-diagnosis of an ultrasound occurs most
often with obese patients, uncooperative
patients, and people with a lot of bowel
gas. I figure a mix-up of the images
could have happened also.

I had mine removed six weeks ago and went
back for follow-up yesterday. Asked to
see my report, which my surgeon hadn't
even read. He says, oh, no stones. He
tells me he didn't even really look at the
gall bladder, just takes it out. But he
did say the gall bladder was inflammed so
that's fine, it's gone. I was having bad
shoulder pain right before surgery. I
asked where the stones went as my scan
said multiple stones. I asked if they
could pass, which he didn't really answer.
He said something about them being
little. I was annoyed at first but the
more I think of it, at least the thing is
gone and no more worry. I have had fatty
foods a few times (not too much, i've lost
70 pounds in the last 2 years so I try to
watch what I eat) and no attacks.
