Ways to Suppress Hunger?
Posted: 12-13-05 14:39pm

Yeah the title is pretty self-explanatory, isn't it? I've been in college for about two months, and i've gained about 5 pounds. I've probably put on more weight since the last time I weighed myself. I'm truly dreading that "freshman 15" right now.

I find myself eating quite often out of boredom, be it snacks or something that would be more of a meal. Sometimes when i'm bored, I even feel hungry, and that prompts me to eat all the more. I don't have a job, so I can't depend on that to occupy my time. I also never go anywhere besides school and the store - yeah i've only made 1 or 2 friends here and I haven't seen them in a couple of weeks, so I can't depend on others to let me spend time with them.

I've gotten to a point where I can't squeeze into a couple pairs of jeans that used to fit me nicely. What I want to know is this: is there any way I can suppress my hunger?

i want to try crash dieting again - i've found in the past that, if I eat nothing for 12-14 hours, I no longer feel hunger at all. The only thing I feel is really bad stomach cramps, like i've been punched in the gut, but I can get over that. That was the only way I was able to lose weight before, and also I wasn't nearly as hungry after crash dieting as I was before. I had such a hard time actually putting food in my mouth. I want to be like that again.

Guys, all I ask is that you please don't tell me how bad crash dieting is - i've done it quite a few times before and i'm fine. But are there any supplements or anything I can take to curb my hunger? I've tried brushing my teeth while hungry and it doesn't work. I've tried chewing gum, but it just makes me more hungry. I have no idea what to do to stop eating everything.

Tasty Or Not

You can try to eat food that mostly contain vitamins and little or no fat.

Do you have problems eating food if it isn't tasty?

Hi,

i don't know any methods of surpressing hunger, but you could maybe think of foods that will last longer - you could freeze foods like yogurts, chocolate raisens or pieces of fruit, don't know if it will help but it sometimes helps me.

Oh my gosh! I have the exact same problem as you!!! I eat out of pure boredom, and as a result have packed on extra pounds along with extra inches! It is sooooo depressing! I have found the supplement called hoodia gordonii; it is a lifesaver!!! It totally surpresses the appetite like nothing I have ever tried before! Give it a try; you can get it on ebay for pretty cheap.
Make sure & get the hoodia gordonii though; some products will say hoodia, but not gordonii, and this is not the same thing. Only the gordonii kind has the appetite surpressing effects...
I wish you luck! Let me know how you're doing if you decide to try it, k?

What is hoodia gordonii?? Do you know how it works and if there are any known short or long term side effects caused by it?

Hoodia gordonii is a complete natural plant found in south africa. They grind it up & put it in capsule form. It tricks your brain into thinking your stomach is full. I've been taking it for about 2 months, and let me tell ya, it is awesome! I'm barely ever hungry anymore!!! Plus, I have lost 3 pounds!
There are no side effects cuz it is an all-natural plant.

Just because this plant is all-natural doesn't mean there are no side effects. Dong quai is all-natural and it causes uterine contractions. Besides, I don't know if I would trust some pill off ebay...That's just me, though.

I'm slowly starting to curb my food cravings, I think. I've been occupying myself lately with ddr and not eating as much...Maybe 1 normal mea a day, along with a couple of small semi-healthy snacks. Also, no changes in my drinking habits (water, juice, and the occasional soda).

Arsenic is totally natural, that would be a great way to curb hunger. And hey it must be good because it is all natural.... Right?

Just kidding, I hate the idea that "all-natural" must be good. It is not so stop thinking "all natural or all organic" is the best. Sodium hydroxide is all organic but I sure don't want to drink or eat it.

Some of the best foods to eat when you are bored and need a snack but do not want to eat bad stuff would be either pretzels, pop corn, rice cakes and even some fat free frozen snacks. Popsicles and frozen fruit bars.

It is hard to break the cycle but with some short walks and a bit of other excersie and some good snack buying practices, you will beat this.

Good luck

Well, I have been taking it for 2 months & i've experienced zero side effects. You don't just have to get it off ebay...You can get it at health food stores as well. I'm not endorsing it...I was just making a suggestion!!!

Have you heard about some people who get so obsessed with computer games that they forget hunger?

I would watch out. How about going down a healthy path? Try walking for twenty minutes and with every day increase it by ten minutes. Also, drinking water when you are bored should fill your belly. Don't deny your body food I mean that's how your heart pumps and your kidneys function. Eat right and maybe go out and get a group to play volleyball (don't know where you live so if it's cold try something else) just change your eatting habits and get moving..If you lay there and eat, of course, your belly is going to expand..I should know i, too, had to put my favorite jeans in the back of the closet..I know have lost ten pounds so go for it girl

Overeating, Undernourished.

Cambion, boredom is definately a motivating factor for over-eating. The biggest problem is the that the food people eat at times like this usually has very poor nutritional value. This means the body still urges for essential dietary substances, the ones that are lacking in what you are eating.

Toxins are known to accumulate in fatty tissue, and it is for this reason that simply taking on a healthy diet will not normally suffice. Fat is a store of energy, but the body will only usually use this stored energy when immediate sources i.E. Food in the stomach have run thin, but nutrients are extracted from food right through the digestive tract, not just the stomach.

Avoiding being overweight is not always about high exercise, but it will certainly speed up the fat-burning process. Try highly nutritional snacks at times when you feel that boredom-induced hunger...And maybe some vitamin supplements. These help to neutralize the "free-radicals" that are generated from fatty foods, which inturn damage healthy cells. Free radicals are toxins harmful on a molecular level in that they are missing an electron; they take electrons from healthy cells, thus destroying them. This reduces cellular efficiency, affecting metabolism, energy uptake and nutrient utilisation: - it's like a chain reaction.

all the best.

Appetite Suppression

You could first try to drink water ~ either in the form of sparkling water with a squeeze of lemon or as herbal tea. Sometimes thirst feels like hunger.

Also, maybe you need more protein & healthy fat at meals to keep you satisfied. Eating things like sweets or chips just keeps you munching, & maybe even makes you more hungry because your blood sugar rises, then falls deeper than before. Try eating a handful of nuts or string cheese or a slice of turkey, all of which are good for you & more satisfying than junk food.

Exercise is a good stress reliever, as well as an appetitie suppressant & a boredom fighter. Take a walk, stretch to music, invite a friend for a jog or swim.

Good luck!

I have the exact same problem
Ive just started college (United Kingdom) and find that in my free periods I am constantly eating
The food isnt always bad...as I am very conscious of what I put in my body

But I have noticed that Ive put on a couple of pounds Sad

I find that one of the most effective ways of suppressing my appetite (which is mostly due to boredom or sadness) is to remind myself of what I want to gain out of losing weight
I look at photos, go for a walk, do some dancing, and really think about what it is I want from losing weight..this usually does the trick Smile
Strength of mind id your biggest advantage!

I also find drinking water very useful...not just a sip though, a good few glasses fills me right up.

But I dont always have time to drink in the day...especially with busy classes etc.
So I find that eating a whole breakfast, made up of energy releasing complex carbs like oats keeps me going without the feeling of hunger.
If you eat sweet sugary breakfasts the afterpeak of the sugar rush will cause you to feel hungry, crave more food etc...so it all starts at breakfast really Smile

dont deny your body of food
eat regularly...just small healthy snacks like a yoghurt and an apple when you're hungry, and next time u feel the need to eat..ask yourself...
am I really hungry?

Thats all I have really Smile
its helped me a lot
so I hope it helps someone else Smile

good luck!
