Q: Pap At First Visit????

It has been like a year and half since I have had a pap, I am going for my first ob visit to my doctor tomorrow, the nurse said I "could" have a pap. Should I have it done? Is it safe for my pregnancy and baby? I didn't have one with my first pregnancy, but only b/c I had had one prior to getting pregnant. I am 22 and have never had an abnormal paps, only been with one guy ever (my husband who has only ever been with me) and never even had a yeast infection or anything, so I am probably okay, but if it totally safe to have one then I will. I just don't want to risk anything. Any thoughts?

They are completely safe during pregnancy. It doesn't matter who you have slept with, you can always get cancer. That is what a pap smear detects....Precancerous cells. It is very important to get one done.

Back 20 years ago when I had my first generation baby's they always went up inside of you at every visit, to measure and stuff--would always make me feel sick after and painful. They did do the regular pap test also, and std checks. But I dont believe there is anything harmful to the baby.

Now adays they hardly at all go inside like that, except like first visit and while in labor, and possible 2 visits before labor.

its just a routine checkup...Every woman has it you shouldnt worry about it. I was also offered all sorts of blood tests and like you im not on the high risk level but I took it anyway=) I understand how you feel though coz its like theyre trying to say that somethins wrong with you. Just get on with it=) you'll feel better afterwards. Theyre just looking after you and your baby

I got pregnant in the month of july, and had my pap done the febrary before. They said they didin't need to do one, but I thought it was an awfully long time between times. I went from feb 2004, to june of 2005 before having a pap.

I went to my appt and the dr did not require it, but I did have it done anyhow. What brought this question to mind for me was I read that you can have abnormal readings while pregnant and the dr said yes that is a possibility, but the test itself is safe.

When I first went to the doctor after I found out I was pregnant, they did a pap test on me. Instead of the metal thingy, they used a clear plastic one. I think its normal, and I even asked them if it harmed the baby, it doesnt, so no worries ^_^
