Need Risk Assessment Advice Posted: 12-19-05 21:09pm
I'm 35 and i've been on my company's
health insurance for 7 years and have had
a clean bill of health the whole time.
Two months ago I got sick with a
complicated case of strep throat and had
some tests done including a cat-scan to
make sure I didn't have absesses, which I
didn't. Now i'm finally healthy again.
Now I may be changing jobs and will need
to get my own insurance. Cobra is cost
prohibitive for me. My concern is that
the online applications all ask if i've
had health insurance in the last 63 days.
I'm worried that they will look at the
last two months and classify me at a much
higher risk than I should be...I'm
generally extremely healthy- don't smoke,
or drink or do drugs, and I exercise and
eat well and almost never get colds.
How will the insurance companies assess
risk? Will they call my provider and look
at my whole history? Or only the last 63
days? And do they always call the
provider to check history? Should I wait
two more months and then apply for
insurance so that my last 63 days will
show a clean bill of health? Thanks for
your help.

You should not be in any kind of a risk
pool. You will be carrying continual
coverage and so there will not be any
"pre-exsisting" conditions to saddle you
with higher coverage costs.
I am not a broker but I am one of the many
americans that lost my coverage due to
disability. Thankfully my wife could put
me on hers before I was 1 day without
coverage. She is a teacher in pasco
county fl, and our insurance cost went
from $109.00/mnth for me and $48/biweek
for her to $715.00/mnth for the lower cost
hmo which is a horrible plan but teachers
get the screw job all around anyway.
