Am I Normal?? Help Please... Posted: 12-20-05 19:04pm
Im 22 years old, and it seems like I
really havent fully developed. It's kinda
hard to talk about, but i've been 5'4
since the age of like 14, I only have
minor facial hair, I still almost look
like im 16, my penis is still pretty small
(but I do have pubic hair), and my voice
really isnt very deep at all, but it has
changed a little. I guess the part that
still really bothers me is my penis only
being about 3 inches fully erect. I have
been using marijuana and smoking
ciggarettes since the age of about 14 or
15. Probably the reason for all of this
happening to me. But I have now been off
cigs and pot for about 4 months. Is there
any hope for me still going through some
type of develpment. I was really late
going through what I think was puberty but
only seemed to have minor changes.
Hopefully some can give me some insight on
this.

I too think the pot and cigarettes are
likely the cause. While some things may
still improve (ie: facial hair), others
will likely not (ie: height). There are
also a few things that could go either way
(ie: penis size). Just stay off the pot,
cigs and anything else, and hope for the
best!

any insight on this situation?

As for the facial hear, I really wouldnt
worry... There are men who never manage
to grow any substantial amount of facial
hair. My ex was 21 and never needed to
shave... Some blokes just arent hairy!
I'm really not sure what kind of effect
recreational drugs like marajuana have on
sexual development... I'd be interested
to find out though if anyone knows. It
strikes me, though, that it perhaps might
be a factor. Would you say smoking
suppressed your sexual feelings?

i wouldnt say it suppressed my sexual
feelings, because I have been sexually
active since about the age of 16 or 17.

Kev,
first off, i'm a doctor, so maybe I can
shed some insight into what's going on
with you. Few questions first:
1) are you able to have erections and
ejaculate?
2) as a child, were you on any
medications for pituitary or renal/adrenal
problems? Any childhood meds at all?
3) any current medications?
4) any history of genetic disorders in
your family (e.G., turner's syndrome,
trisomy 13, down's syndrome, kleinfelter's
syndrome, etc.)?
5) how tall are your parents?
6) is your dad hairy/normal looking?
I'm 35 and I look like i'm 22. I shave
about once a week, look very young, and
get "carded" all the time when I am at
bars, etc. No chest hair, no arm hair,
and very little body hair. My voice
isn't all that deep either. Some men
just have low testosterone levels and
never fully develop secondary sex
characteristics. In your case, if it's
not a genetic or medical condition, then I
suspect it's just a combination of low
testosterone coupled with simple genetics
(i.E., short stature, slight build,
etc.).
As for your penis, don't worry about it
being small. As long as it works and
works well, you should be able to please
your partner and yourself without
problems. Accept yourself for who you
are and don't worry about what you think
you should be. As you get older,
you'll come to appreciate your youthful
looks. It could be worse, you could be
22, hairy as hell, and balding.
My advice: if you don't have a family
history of genetic disorders, you still
might want to be examined by a physician.
If you can, find a pediatric
endocrinologist or regular endocrinologist
and have a complete physical examination,
including a complete blood work up (smac,
cbc, testosterone levels, etc.). You
could also seek consultation with a
urologist to have your testicles examined
to see if they are properly developed.
You're 22, which is still pretty young.
Many guys don't stop growing and
developing until 24 or 25. Each person
is different in terms of growth and
development. I would have a complete
physical with labs to ensure everything is
developing properly.

I know this is an old topic, but when
someone can help, helps is good at any
time.
in my case nothing is worse than being
mis-diagnosed with having delayed puberty
only to find out that you have kallmann's
syndrome/hypogonadatrophic hyponadism.
I'm 29 and I have no sex drive. I have
chosen not to take the meds needed because
of a certain company here in the states
that's involved in research I find morally
and ethically wrong. If I had the
money, i'd go to the uk and get what I
need, but hey. I can live with my
choice.
Besides, i've learned that there are more
ways to express love than sex. And i've
been lucky enough to find a warm,
compassionate, understanding woman.
Took a while to finally trust someone, but
that's my own issues coming to light.
I would suggest finding an
endocrinologist. I also suggest (and
yes I do know this part is extremely hard)
that you talk to various family members.
Find out of any of them have had delayed
puberty (male or female). In my case,
it was my mother's side. My uncle went
through puberty at the age of 19. Gotta
love those dormant genes, eh?
If you ever need someone to talk to, send
me a message.
