My Doctor Wont Let Me Get Sleeping Pills Posted: 12-30-05 01:46am
Im fifteen and my doctor told my mom not
to get me sleeping pills. This was fine
untill school started, but now my grades
have dropped since last year (as to high
bs and cs) and I think it may be because I
really cannot concentrate at school. Even
when i'm exausted it is really hard for me
to fall asleep. I also have obsessive
problems when trying to sleep. I have to
have a machine on for white noise, the
doors closed, and if my blankets are not
just perfect I go insane. I get so
frustrated sometimes that I just give up
and end up reading or watching a movie for
the rest of the night. I think if I had
sleeping pills my performance at school
would go up, and I wouldnt be so obsessed
about how I sleep. I drive my friends
crazy when I go to their houses and its
getting a bit embarassing. I want to know
what kind of problm I have with having to
have everything perfect when going to
sleep (i'm not like this in the day time)
and if sleeping pills really would be ok.
Thanks -julie

Some doctors dont like perscribing them to
teens, because its just a natural kinda
thing for them to be up all hours of the
nite.. But then again still eventually
sleep. You can go to the pharmacy
yourself and purchase sleeping pills off
the shelf. They dont have to be
perscribed. But I suggest asking your
doctor why he doesnt want you to take
them.. But I definately think it would
help.. And I know what u mean.. I need
to keep my computer or fan on just for
noise and the door always has to be closed
or no mater how tired I am I will not be
able to fall asleep...

Well I definatly would go get them, but if
I did my mom would get so mad at me! She
wont even let me take like a nightime cold
and sinus to help me. She did finally get
so mad that she got me some herbal/
natural (that kinda thing) at the store
and I took them for like a month but it
did absolutly nothing!

You are so young to be having this
peoblem! Just a question, do you drink a
lot of soda or regular tea, iced tea?
Those drinks have a lot of caffine in them
and most regular teas have more caffine
than coffee!
Your obsessive activity is prob from the
expectancy that you aren't going to sleep
and the frustration of waiting for sleep
to happen...In short it is probably due in
part to anxiety.
Did your doctor run any tests to see why
you are having these problems?
It sounds like you need to go to a
specialist to determine the cause.
Over the counter meds are fine for an
occasional problem but not a long term
cure! You are young and if you are a
girl you must consider any damage to your
reproductive organs, liver & kidneys
of any long term medications.
Have you been checked for sleep apnea?
Do you snore? Do you have pain? What
kinds of things do you think about when
you are trying to fall asleep? Do you
worry about things that are going on
rather than trying to clear your mind?
A simple trick to try is to eat some
protein before going to bed, something
like a piece of meat or a spoonful of
peanut better just might help. Don't make
it a sandwich, just the plain meat
{poultry is a good choice, and not
processed deli meat but the real thing} or
a spoonful of pb.
You can also try "imaging" as you try to
fall asleep; just imagine a special world
where you would like to live, your own
planet, a town, etc. And imagine what
kind of house you would have there---your
own design, your own colors, your own
furniture, maybe all futuristic, imagine
the sky of your world, maybe 2 suns, a
garden, what kind of flowers, etc. It
just gives your mind a chance to relax and
explore and gives you peaceful things to
think about.
