Q: Smoking While Pregnant

I'm 6 weeks pregnant and I smoke cigarettes. I would normally smoke about a pack a day...Lately I haven't been able to smoke 3 a day...The past two days I haven't gotten sick after I light one up...But I have only been smoking 3-5 and that's only half of a cigarette. Will this be really harmful to my baby?

It's always harmful to your baby, even second-hand smoke is harmful to your baby, but it's better to cut down if you can't quit.

Smoking
I used to smoke a pack a day myself. Since becoming pregnant I have been smoking five or less a day. I feel terribly guilty about it and people are really mean when they see me light up in public, but this is my life. I am, of course, worried about the harmful affects on baby but I haven't been able to quit totally. Perhaps I am lucky that my baby, now at 36 weeks, is totally healthy. Everything in ingest the baby does as well. Most importantly, I think, is to eat healthy, stay active, and avoid alcohol and other drugs. Hey, we do the best we can, right?! I haven't had a drink in 30 weeks and am sure looking forward to having one soon! Abstinence makes the heart grow fonder:)

I used this as a way too stop completely... Smoking causes alot of complications in a babys life that may not be noticable for a few years.. But some people are lucky. Hopefully you guys are one of them.

Smoking is always bad for a baby, even just you breathing in one inhale of second hand smoke. Not a lot of people realise just how bad it is. I learned in my prenatal class that when you smoke or even just breathe in second hand smoke it causes your baby to stop "breathing" the whole time your baby is inside you it practises breathing by swallowing amniotic fluid, this developes its lungs, until the day it is born. But one inhale of second hand smoke can stop your babies "breathing" for a couple hours, so if you are a heavy smoker your baby is never getting a chance to develope its lungs.

Just something to think about. I thought that was crazy! I try to advoid anyone with a cigarette now (i don't and haven't smoked).

Good luck quitting ladies!!

Hi I smoke and I know how hard it is. When I was pregnant it was really hard to quit. I was told I couldnt use the patch or anything. I asked my pastor to pray for my that god would take my cravings away. It helped. It took my about a week to stop. I tapered down gradually. A couple times I had one with my friend b/c she smoked and it was hard to resist. I felt really guilty and when I get pregnant again I will stop. Its hard, just keep trying to stop. They say it can increase miscarriage risk and that it has an affect on size of the baby. Baby doesnt get as much nutrients when the mother smokes. But try.

Depends on genetics

lets say woman 1 smoke 6 smokes a day, woman 2 smokes 6 smokes a day so woman one has a healthy baby no problems and woman two doesnt. Everything in life is based on how your system candle handle a certain drug, food drink etc some people cant take antibiotics but you can. My mother smoked through the pregnancy with all of us (6 kids) there is nothing wrong with except for dieseases we inherited from genetics (like cerebal palsy, muscular dystrophy and adhd) that family already had. Truly depends on the person, dont feel bad/ guilty your doing ood already and if anyone gives you a problems or tries to inforce their way upon you tell them to "f%#$ off" dont worry you will live

The thing that made it hard for me when I first found out I was pregnant was that my husband was really adamant that I stop-while he continued to smoke! Not in the house or around me but I could smell it on him, and stuff. I know I was the one with child but I didnt like being told to just quit like it was no big deal while he still smoked.

Next time we have agreed that we will quit together, for health and emotional support.

Do you think that is fair??

What I've Heard
I quit smoking almost 3 years ago with the help of wellbutrin. Anyway... I heard a report about a scientific study done at some university where they monitored women who smoked while pregnate. They monitored the baby and they found that when the mother even thought about lighting up a cig. The baby's heart rate begain to race and the baby started to show signs of stress. They said that it makes since because most of the oxygen gets cut off from the baby when the mother inhails smoke.

Cut down as much as you can!!
