General Q&A Question
Posted: 01-03-06 17:43pm

I have been having pain in my legs for over a month. It started out worse in the left leg, but now it is worse in the right leg with almost no pain in the left. It is worse at night and at rest. It is in several locations; the calf(most common), the knee, the thigh, the butt and the ankle. It also ranges in pain; a dull ache like a growing pain, a sore pain like muscle aches, cramping, sharp, and sometimes a heat with small sharp pricks or pinches. My feet and hands tingle often, too. There is no swelling. It sometimes goes away for a few days then returns. Some other symptoms i have that may or may not be related are mild chest pain, some arm pain, back pain(around shoulder blades) a need to cough but cannot cough without forcing it, and tight pinching sensations going from my clavicle to shoulder to up my neck(seldomly). but the leg pain is the worst. 2 weeks ago drs. in the e.r. gave me blood tests(pt, ptt, d-dimer) and lung scan and a CT chest angiography to rule out a pulmonary embolism(i had trouble breathing at the time, they said i had pnuemonia/pluerisy). i am worried it could have to do with blood clots...but did the angiography rule that out? what else could it be?

It seems that your doctors doubt that deep vein thrombosis in your legs, complicated with pulmonary embolism, has caused your condition. PT's, PTT's and D-Dimer's are used for detecting deep vein thrombosis, while CT-angiography is used to detect thrombo-embolism in the lungs. Thrombosis of the leg vein accompanies swelling of the affected leg, which isn’t your case. If there isn’t thrombosis, you can request an X-ray examination of the lumbar vertebral column to look for spondylotic changes of the vertebrae and/or intervertebral disks. These, however, aren’t expected at your age.
