I Can't Seem to Find the Right Meds
Posted: 12-22-03 01:40am

I've been depressed for three years now. I hate going to work because feel like I have to avoid everybody. Every day it feels like i'm really hurting my character because I never have anything to say to anyone. I really don't feel like my normal cheerful self. So far i've tried paxil, prozac, welbutrin, zoloft, and am currently taking luvox and risperdal. None of these meds have made me feel better. I'm beginning to lose hope and wondered if anyone has tried these and found something else that worked better.

Let me start by saying I know where you're speaking from. Last summer I completely lost my purpose and my ability to go on. I went through what they call a mid-life crisis at age 22. I had that looming darkness of depression follow me everywhere. I was very much not my self. Essentially I took some lexapro and worked through my problems inside myself. The only reason I even took lexapro is because it isn't a mood-altering drug, its a chemical adjuster. Which means no fake smiles really.
Beyond the medication have you considered changing your life? Maybe even dramatically? All too often in our world we forget about the real freedom we have. To do anything we please at any given moment. If things hadn't changed for me like they did, I might have taken off and changed up the cards. .. Dramatically.. .I don't know. . ..Give it some thought.

Well dear, it sounds like you suffer from depression, not just some phase. Changing your life might help you for a week or two, but the underlying problem will not go away. Are you in therapy? Or does your general practitioner prescribe your meds? Maybe, it is not just depression that you suffer from. Maybe you need a different kind of med. If you are seeing a therapist, I would ask them first and if it does not help, switch therapists. But sometimes just talking your problems out will take a lot of weight off of your shoulders.
But anyway, talk to your doc and see what they have to say. I haven't ever found a med that helped me fully either. I am on zoloft now, and I just take it for comfort. If you look it up though, there is no proof that antidepressants really do any good at all. There is not proof that a thing such as a "chemical imbalance" even exists. They did tests and 50% of the people were given empty pills and the other 50% were given a real drug. There were hardly any differences between how the people felt. Pretty wierd, huh.
But those of us who suffer from depression know that it is a real thing, but unfortunately we do not have anything to truly help it yet. Good luck.
