Tooth Abscess

Ok heres my story. About 2.5 years ago a front tooth that had always been sensitive to pain. I was drinking something cold. The next day had excuciating pain in my teeth to contact. I went to the dentist and took an xray. She said there was an infection and I scheduled a root canal.

When I showed up to the root canal the pain in the tooth was completley gone. There was a small pimple above the tooth that only relaly hurt when I pushed on it really hard with my finger. Anyways, she took an xray, said the infection was gone and that she didnt want to start the root canal unless it was absolutley necessary.

Flash foward to now, its still there same symptoms, really small pimple only discomfort when I push on it. Ive read some places that you dont need a root canal because the pus is sterile and wont spread.

My question is:

1. Is a root canal absolutley necessary, or can it be drained in another way?

2. I just had a root canal on a diff tooth so right now my dental insurance limit is kicked...Is it ok to wait another year to get it done (if need be) so insurance can cover it?

Thanks !!

On occasions they will make a small cut in the gum, however this is not the recommended treatment path and normally only done when there is poor access to the tooth.

You could go to your gp/md an get a course of anti-biotics as one option.

The risk you run be waiting is a slightly worse infection each time the tooth flares up and the infection can also begin to cause referred pain in other teeth.

Thanks for the reply.

I think I may just be freaking myself out since I had this recent root canal. Im just worried about the other side effects ive read about like tooth loss, bone infection, etc.... Is it possible for an infection to lie dormant with no further complications (and just have the small pimple?)
