My dad is 64 years old and has battled
gout for as long as I can remember. It
seems to run in his family. He was
diagnosed with parkinson's disease about 2
1/2 yrs. Ago so getting around for him is
hard anyway - even without gout. About a
week before christmas he got gout again
and has been battling it ever since. Two
days ago his doctor, an internal medicine
Dr., prescribed a medicine that he has to
take once an hour until he throws up or
has diahrea. So far nothing has happened
and he has taken it faithfully. He's
miserable and I am wondering if there are
any other remedies he might try. I've
never been on a message board before, but
I love my dad so much and he's battling
the parkinson's with all he has. I can't
stand to see him in so much pain from the
gout on top of the parkinson's. Any help
would be appreciated!!!
Thanks.

Sorry your dad has those medical
conditions and is in pain. A few
suggestions about gout pain:
1) ask the doc to give him an injection
of steroid such as methylprednisone
either in muscle or at the gouty joint.
This can relieve the pain almost instantly
and can last for up to 2 weeks. By that
time gout will get better.
2) I believe the doc gave him colchicine.
If it's not working, he may like to ask
the doc to see if it's ok to try other
meds such as indocin, or other nsaids.
3) more info on what to do during a gout
attack can be found under "emergency gout
treatments" at http://www.Icuredmygout.Org .
4) ask him to see a rheumatologist.
They are the best in treating gout.
