When Should I See a Doctor In Regards to Irregular Cycle? Posted: 01-07-06 03:32am
Hello,
i got off the pill back in late october so
that my husband and I could finally start
trying for our first baby. I haven't had
a period since. Have taken pregnancy
tests and they turn up negative...Plus I
show no signs of being pregnant...So I am
pretty sure I am not.
I have been on the pill for approx 13
years (from 19 to 32). The only time I
have had a regular cycle is while I am on
the pill. Before getting on the pill it
was normal for me to go for months at a
time with out a period. I realize that
after getting off of the pill, it takes
some time for the body to adjust itself
and get back on its own cycle...But I am
afraid I am going to have the same problem
as before I got on the pill in terms of no
period for months at a time. If that is
the case, then I dont know how in the
world I am going to get pregnant.
So, I guess my first question would
be...Is it normal for you to experience no
period for several months after getting
off of the pill?
My second would be...How long do I go with
out having a period before I see my ob-gyn
about the irregularity?
Third question - is it unhealthy to be
this irregular?
Thanks in advance. Any advice is greatly
appreciated.

I think u should see a gyn/obst or
specialist when going without period for 2
months and more without pregnancy or a
valid reason.
Regular periods show that our body is
healthy and having irregular periods does
bring up a concern.
Go and see a doc soon.

Did you see a doctor to find out why you
had irregular periods before you went on
the pill, or did the doctor just put you
on the pill to regulate you, without
looking for a cause?

I have polycystic ovarian syndrome, so I
don't get normal periods. For that
reason I have to stay on bcp when not ttc.
Not having normal period makes it 10
times more likely for you to get ovarian
cancer. I would go in and see a doctor
right away. He will probably give you
prometrium or provera to induce your
menses. I know it can take up to a year
for normal women to regulate after bcp,
but if you have never had normal periods
on your own, this warrants concern. Make
an appointment! Good luck ttc!

Thanks For the Replies... Posted: 01-07-06 20:33pm
Thanks for the replies. Will definitely
be getting in to see my ob-gyn now. I
believe my family doctor tested my thyroid
when I was younger to try and see if that
was causing the irregularity but
everything came back normal. So nothing
was determined when it came to the cause
of the irregularity. And if I remember
correctly, birth control was his solution
for getting me regular. Again, thanks
for the replies. I would have probably
stalled getting in to my ob-gyn for
another 6 months or so...Thinking to
myself that it was just normal after
getting off of the pill.

Just a question - are you in good health?
Are you underweight? I found that when I
lost a lot of weight, my periods became
irregular and I was told by my ob/gyn that
it was caused by lack of hormones in my
body due to lack of body fat...

Go And See Ur Doctor Posted: 01-12-06 22:18pm
It's fairly normal to not have a pd for a
while being that u were on the pill for so
long. Just like u said, ur body needs
time to get 13 yrs worth of hormones out
of it's system before u will be regular
again. I would say after 2 months of not
having a pd I would go see a doctor to
make sure that everything's ok. But in
the meantime don't worry or stress urself
out over it b/c that could delay ur pd.
