Doctor Question
Posted: 01-07-06 18:12pm

I was prescribed the antidepressant-antianxiety med, paxil about 5 years ago. In the last two years on the drug, I started having manic type symptoms and the dosage was raised to 90mg by a doctor. The manic stages happened more frequently and I started taking more than 90mg, sometimes up to maybe 200-250mg a day.
I could not stop popping them and shook and starting vomiting daily. I could not decrease the dosage, I tried with help from a doctor and it made me more ill.

One day I was so ill I decided to flush all the pills down the toilet and quit like that, cold turkey. I suffered extreme withdrawal, I was vomiting nonstop, crying nonstop, shaking and convulsing and my whole body was tingling and pinching as well as having trouble walking. This subsided in about two weeks and I started feeling better. 5-6 months later I began having hallucinations and was diagnosed with schizophrenia, now almost two years later, I have recently had a psych tell me I do not have schizophrenia, all the hallucinations and paranoia and symptoms I have are from paxil.

Is this even possible? That almost two years later I still have paxil damage? I have never heard of anyone hallucinating from paxil...I have researched and I am becoming frusterated. I don't know what to do. Note-i have never tried any other drugs.

What was your mental health bfore going on paxil? It's true that some of these meds can harm/damage your brain, that's why we should be very careful w/ them. As far as whether paxil is causing your symptoms 2 yrs. Later, I don't know, schizophrenia or some other mental disorder is a possibility. You should seek different opinions (from different doctors); to tell the truth, some of them don't know what they're doing & give wrong diagnoses. You should also continue doing research (on schiz. Also & other disorders w/ your symptoms) & you will find the answer. Just b careful w/ those doctors!

I have had schizophrenia for about 20 yrs; but my mind didn't collapse till I was about 12 yrs.; i'm 23 now. (i was always abnormal but all my symptoms didn't really come out until I was 12) and I have:
hearing of voices that say evil things against me & god
i used to have hallucinations (not anymore) in my mind (visions of things)
some paranoia (thinking someone has done something to me & finding out they really haven't)
emotional instability (severe depression; unable to feel happy, angry, etc. In certain situations)
intense ongoing feelings of rejection; low self-esteem.
Severe depression

i'm so sorry for all that u went through.

Hope this helps/encourages you in some way.
