Yeah I was def get that fixed...Lay traps out ..With peanut butter or cheese on them ...Or another thing are those sticky pads...But something those dont kills the rats..They only get stuck on them...I wouldnt handle them yourself ...I would also get someone to come and look at the house and see if there is a hole that they can patch where these lil creatures are coming through...Just spray oust or lysol...To kill the smell and bacteria in the air for now!...

You shouldnt mess with rat poison, im not sure if you could breathe it or not, but if you can it would be worse for you than the rat urine smells. The presence of rats is not any worse than the urine and germs that are already there, even if you got rid of all the rats. And if you have any pets you could come in contact with the poison from the animals being exposed to it, not to mention it would kill your animals.

You need the house sanitised to protect from their germs and such.

Although we have had mice in our house from time to time, I would not want to bring a new baby home with mice or their germs and urine in the air and on the walls and carpet. Sanitize is the key. Whether you are able to get rid of the mice or not. The only thing that will get rid of mice for good is the "sound wave gadget". If you have other small animals it will drive them crazy, so it is not reccommended in that case. As in guenie pigs, hamsters, ferrets, might even bother cats or dogs, I dont know. You plug it into an electric socket and it send sound waves that make the mice, and rats leave forever as long as it is still plugged in. No harmful poisons and no horrible mouse traps. I would look on the internet for them--or locally at hardware store, or home improvement store.

And sanitize your whole house, under the sinks, under cabinets, all cabinets, all counter tops, shampoo carpets again, wash all the walls, and window seals--before baby comes home. But make sure you use rubber gloves and avoid breathing any kind of harmful cleaners.
