Should I Be Worried?
Posted: 01-12-06 16:30pm

I don't remember ever having "regular" periods. My cycle ranges anywhere from 30-42 days - but always comes within this time range. I have been on many different medications for migraine headaches - until about a month or two ago when I stopped having them. I have been having secretion from my nipples when I squeeze them for about 8 months (roughly). I also have been married for two & 1/2 years now and have not been preventing pregnancy - but am not pregnant. My ob-gyn is worried that these 3 symptoms mean I have too much prolactin being produced in my body... Which may be caused by a growth in the pituitary gland. However, my mother said it took her 3 or 4 years to get pregnant, migraines run in my family, and I believe the medications I was taking for my migraines (calan, opiates, etc.) may have caused the elevated prolactin levels (if they are elevated). Should I be worried?

Does it sound like I am infertile?

Do you believe I could have a pituitary tumor?

Is my irregular cycle something to worry about?

Could difficulty getting pregnant be hereditary?

I've new here tonight, and wanted to share my experince as being diagnosed w/seconday amerronhea. I'm 27 yrs old. I went off the pill in april after being on it since I was 17-18 yrs old. Finally the doctor decided for me to try provera. I have taken it about 2-3 wks ago and nothing yet. So I called the doctor and she said let's give it another week. I also had nipple discharge that was b/c I had a prolactin of 140 level of 140 (normal range 1.8-1.9) which dropped to normal after d/c the birth control. I also take anti-depressants, and they thought it was that making the level to increase so high. I went off the anti-depressant and it was still high. If you have a high prolactin level theres an indication of a pitutary tumor. (i have an mri for the last pasts 2 yrs and it they come back negative). (thank god). Also after d/cing the birth control I lost 25 lbs. So now i"m not responding to the provera, I also have had pelvic & transvaginal ultrasound and it came back negagtive. So i'm going to give it another week, and get bloodwork tomorrow at work. Has anyone ever experience a problem like this or similar???? It's really frustrating and stressful. All I want to do is be able to have a healthy baby. I get so depressed thinking I will not be able to conceive............ :( :( :( :(

My ob-gyn told me today that my being thin (5' - 90#) is what is probably causing my periods to be irregular... Which, (my periods being irregular) is what is causing it to take longer for me to get pregnant. She said that when your periods are irregular you don't ovulate every single month, thus making it more difficult to get pregnant (timing wise). I hope this helps others in the same situation to breathe a sigh of relief like I did.
