My wife has been diagnosed with
gestational diabetes and she seems to be
taking it pretty hard. And, rightfully
so, I suppose. I am trying to be
supportive, but I am an "information"
person. Without it, I just feel lost and
my support is lessened.
At her sugar tests with the physician, she
was highest after fasting (20 points too
high) and right after meals (2 points too
high). After a consult with a diabetes
specialist, we have begun a diet to combat
the high levels. Primarily, lower
(contolled) carbohydrates.
Oddly enough, her blood sugar levels are
acceptable during the day. In the morning
(prior to eating), her levels are highest,
or after fasting. Today was her first
"self test" and registered 99. She ate
breakfast and tested and hour later which
was high also. But, all subsequent tests
during the day were "normal", even after
meals. She believes a test three hours
after a meal would be high also, due to
the long period after eating.
Why would lack of eating cause blood sugar
to elevate? How can we keep the levels
lower other than diet and
exercise...Timing? Realistically, how can
this affect my wife and newborn, post
delivery? How often does gd affect women
and their children long term? Any help
would be greatly appreciated. I will also
croos-post into the diabetes forum of this
site. Thanks!

This can be extremely serious for both
your wife & unborn child but that's
really all I actually know. For
information go to a search engine like
yahoo or google & search under
"gestational diabetes", "natural solutions
to g...D....", "foods that help lower
blood sugar", also alternative medicines
might be worth checking out as something
like naturopathy could be worth trying or
checking on a search engine under say
"naturopathy & g....D....", "illnesses
& conditions associated with
pregnancy", these are just some search
engine/information path starters.
Htt
p://www.Lef.Org this is the site for
a place called life extension which sells
stuff but they also provide alot of really
good medical information - if you go to
the page then type in gestational diabetes
in the search section at the top right
habd side of the page it will give you a
tonne of sites to look up on this
condition.
Good luck to all 3 of you.

I was diagnosed with this when I was
pregnant with my son. Don't let people
frighten you about this disease. Yes, it
can be dangerous if not taken care of.
But as long as you diet as prescribed, it
is absolutely fine. Make sure your wife
knows that it was nothing that she did
wrong. She will simply have to watch her
carbohydrate and sugar intake. Do some
research and have her see a dietician if
possible. But, it should be fine I
promise.

Some Insight... Posted: 12-24-03 22:40pm
Alright, emotions seem to have settled a
bit, at least for now. I have been
looking into the "dawn phenomenon" at
diabetes forum
(http://www.Diabetesforum.Net/cgi-bin/disp
lay_engine.Pl?Category_id=8&content_id
=87). This sounds very similar. So,
tonight, we are going to awake at 1:30 and
have a yogurt snack and possibly test bs
level. Perhaps this will assist. Assist
how, i've no idea. But, we are willing to
"test the waters".
Does anyone have any firm numbers for
blood sugar levels? We have read or been
told fasting sugar levels which are
different. Some max at 120 while others
140. My wife, being a bsn, rn (treating
diabetics, bi, strokes, et cetera)
encounters the diabetics who have been
non-compliant with their treatment
guidelines for years. Therefore, she
encounters the end of some pretty nasty
diabetes problems. But, she is also very
familiar with blood sugar levels. Their
"acceptable" levels are typically the top
end of the ranges we are encountering,
now. Any ideas?

Just the site I suggested above & the
