Lower Back Pain, Kidney Infection, and Required Examinations
Posted: 01-16-06 11:41am

I have been having lower back pain, first on the right side, that went away, now its on the left. No trouble urinating, no fever or chills, no vomiting, just finishing menstral cycle, sharp achy, constant pain in lower back. The last time I felt this pain, it was a kidney infection, but I couldnt urinate, and it burned, that was 5 years ago. My question is, could this just be a kidney infection without all of the symptoms, or Should I have ovarin ultrasound?

It does not seem that you are experiencing a kidney infection as there is no high temperature, fever, and disuria (painful urinating) present. A urine examination will confirm or reject this possibility of infection/inflammation in the kidneys. Ultrasounds are useful for identifying both renal causes (cysts, stones, tumors) and ovarian discorders (cysts, tumors). I also recommend you consider requesting an X-ray of the lumbar vertebra to detect spondylotic changes of the vertebra. A CT-scan is the best method for imaging the abdominal organs and intervertebral discs.
