I've had really bad gas problems
(flatulence) for many years but it was
about a year ago when the answer dawned on
me: I have never been a functional burper.
When I do burp they are really weak and
practically unannounced and erratic. They
happen so fast that I am not able to even
understand what I did to make it happen.
It is this involuntary nature of my burps
that has always bothered me, because I am
always bloated with gas but with no
knowledge or expertise on how to
manipulate my esophogus to release the
buildup in my stomach.
But there is movement in my esophogus. I
can feel the gas climbing up, but
somewhere at the top it cannot escape and
is forced back down. When I feel it
coming up I try to flex and position my
neck and mouth in diferent ways, but
rarely with any success. I have seen a
specialist about this but he has been less
than helpful in finding the problem or a
solution. I had a biopsy down the
esophogus to test the pressure, but these
tests showed that I had normal reflexes
and a loose value. But I think the
problem is farther up at the top of the
esophogus where it joins my mouth cavity.
I have not been able to arrange a nother
follow up appointment, and someother
people I talk to say there there is no
valve up there so there shouldn't be a
reason why the gas can't come up.
I might also add that I rarely vomit; in
fact over the christmas break was the
first time I threw up in years, brought on
my a violent reaction to something I ate.
I figure that my motility is somehow
screwed up.
I have had trouble finding information
about this problem on the internet. I
fear that I am alone in the world with
this problem, but hopefully someone here
can offer some helpful information on the
subject.

I have the exact same problem it doesnt
matter what I eat or drink I get this ball
of gas and I can feel I climbing up my
esophugus but for some odd reason I cant
get it to come out of my mouth and then it
goes away I have to make myself burp
sometimes in order for it to come back
up...I have been to the dr and they told
me it was an ulcer and gave me pariet for
it that helped for the little while I was
on it but as soon as it as gone back came
the pains and gas in my stomach

I also have this problem I had not thrown
up in six years until two weeks ago. My
burping was non exsistent, I could only do
the small burp's that feel like you are
only bringing air in. I have discovered
that when the gas is really bad I can do
enough of the small burps to work up a
real one. I have i.B.S. Witch is
basically a lazy colon I think that I have
a lazy esophogas as well. If anyone finds
any info let us know.

Ok, so I've been researching issues with
gas, etc....I remember one time gettin so
sick I was certain I'd throw up...off I go
to hang over the toilet and wait for it to
come up and whadayaknow....it was the
hugest burp ever known to mankind. I felt
totally normal after that. I cannot make
myself burp to save my life. I know it
can happen but very rarely and
spontaneously. I also get those weird
gurgles that sound like eeeerrrrrppppp in
my throat. Wish someone could tell me
that there is a cure or something that
could be done about it. I also Love Kashi
Go Lean cereal, but man, don't try this
one if ya are having problems with
"natural gas".........whew, it'll kill ya.
Bloated all day and definitely not
burping, if ya know what I mean.
Eventually the gas works it's way out but
not without some pain.

Hello All, My name is Steve and I'm a non
burper!
Drives me crazy that so many of us have
this problem and no-one takes us
seriously!
UK doctors just palm you off and say go
and have a Coke of another fizzy drink but
for me as I guess for the rest of you all
does not help the situation.
If I am out on the Piss after 3pints I
have to do the fingers trick then go onto
SOCO's and lemonade. But does anyone else
have the (what I call) the Ribena Carton
effect?
Where you blow down the straw into a
drinks carton, the air comes rushing back
out and with it brings some of the
drink!!! Sounds like a Friday night to
me!!!
PS: Nice to know I'm not alone out here!

I can burb normally, but sometimes I do
get this can't burb thing. You open your
mouth to try to get the burp to come all
the way up and it feels like a soft burp
but really it seems like more air is
coming in. The only solution I've found
to aleviate it when it happens is to
tap/pound on my sternum repeatedly with my
fist or fingertips while trying to burp
until it comes out. Sometimes you'll get
the hiccups after this... do you think the
diaphram has something to do with this
problem? The burps feel good, but if you
have a lot of air you'll have to do it a
lot and your sternum will start to hurt...
but hey your hitting yourself so it will
eventually hurt right? At least you'll
feel relieved when all the air is out

this is great... After 24 years of not
knowing "how" to burp, I finally find out
that I am not alone! All of the previous
posters have spoken about so many of my
problems. I have told so many of my
friends of my problems and they go through
stages in belief. First they don't
believe at all, second they try and teach
me, then lastly the give up and just start
breaking my B@lls about it. I wish one
time I could just down a beer in a
drinking contest!
One thing that I do is "gag" when brushing
my teeth. Nothing comes out, but a huge
gush of air. Different then a normal
"gag." That whole gurgle thing, I hate
that too. I have done it a couple of
times when making out with a girl. I feel
it coming, so I try and pull away....
Embarrassing all the same.
I feel like I know you all so well!

Another Non-burper Posted: 06-21-07 13:05pm
I knew I wasn't crazy because I have one
friend who has the same problem, but it
never seemed to really bother her...I'm
glad to see there are others like me! On
top of it, beer is my favorite drink so it
poses a problem quite often.
I've never been able to burp on command.
The only time I burp is right before I
vomit and it's totally uncontrolled. I
have always had a very strong gag reflex
(every time I got x-rays done at the
dentist when I was a kid, I threw up on
them) and sometimes when I gag I will burp
also, but it's also uncontrolled because I
can spontaneously vomit when I gag
also...in other words, if I gag, I can't
really control what happens.
I get the gurgles also, and sometimes have
those bubble burps, as I call them, when I
can feel a tiny bubble of air come out and
it's almost like a hiccup. I usually have
two or three of those in a row and feel
better. Again, I have no control over
them.
I remember when I was about five and my
mom took me to the doctor because of my
flatulence problem. He just said I
swallowed too much air. I didn't realize
the connection until I was much older.
I also have IBS which causes bouts of
excrutiating gas pains (which can last an
hour or more and I have passed out from
the pain) followed by horrible diarrhea.
Once it passes, I'm okay.
I know these things must all be related,
but I've never been to the doctor
specifically for the burping problem.
I have had the same problem when I'm
kissing...inside me it almost sounds like
a tiny spring is being unsprung. Maybe it
has to do with the fact that we're so
relaxed and our throats are more open...?
But yes, it's embarrassing.
I would love to find a cure...today,
especially, it is driving me nuts...which
is why I decided to do a search for it.

Heres a few things.
Avoid fizzy drinks.
and when you think your going too burp.
You have too take short gulps of air.
If this doesn't work.
Talk to someone either a doctor or someone
you think you can trust to help.
Hope this helps.

Me too! :o( Posted: 02-13-08 13:56pm
Hi there,
I thought, all these years, it was normal
that I didn't burp. It's nice to know
there's a whole community of us! I do,
what I call, "frog noises", those little
releases of air that kind of get stuck in
your throat but aren't real burps.
About a year and a half ago, I was
diagnosed with an ulcer and have been
taking Prilosec OTC ever since. I've
tried everything - anti-acids, fiber
supplements, diet changes, I no longer
drink soda and I drink about 2 liters of
water a day - nothing seems to reverse my
non-burping.
It's so frustrating! If anyone's found a
remedy, please share!

me too! Posted: 02-19-08 03:34am
Since the age of four I complained of
horrible stomach aches and gas pains, I
have never really burped my entire life, a
couple times it was like a combined hiccup
burp thing, but mostly, my friends and
family call it the frog burp, 'there's a
frog in my belly' they said when I was
young!
After years of all kind of tests and
harrassing my doctor for answers, I had
some crazy stomach test done where I was
upside down on a large circle machine,
they found I had a 'hiatal hernia' a
hernia/ulcer in my esophagus. Surgery is
available but super risky and not
reccomended.
I can not burp, I do have loud gurgles
I have stomach aches and terrible gas
pains, my only relief is to lay down till
the pains pass, ususally under my ribs
I have wacky bowels, nothing the same
twice, could be IBS?
I have horrible heartburn - coffee,
anything carbonated is a NO
I have acid reflux at night, using 2
pillows - try not to eat for about 3-4
hours before bed
If I drink too much water my stomach
literally swishes when I walk
I water down all cocktails, as beer and
coolers are a NO
I have no problems throwing up - too much
greasy or cheesy foods come back up,
undigested, 24 hours or more after I have
eaten them
I recently heard apple cider vinegar helps
with the burning acid feeling in your
chest, but I still have yet to try that.
If any one has a bloating remedy send me
the info!

my god,i feel the same way right now.it
sucks cause it sometimes hits me when im
working out and it forces me to stop what
im doing,i try to burp out and its like
blocked around my throaght area,it makes
it hard to breath and it gets me all
dizzy,i try to burp out but the more i try
the worser it gets,i wish i could help, ive
tryed almost everythng but i fiqured out
you just either chill out and
breathnormally or go out for a walk.ive
asked doc's before but they usually act on
another problem i have and kinda ignore
that.
i know it comes from all the b***s*** we
eat like all the fast foods,"gassy
foods"it starts messing up your stomach
system and it becomes weaker and lazy.
cause my problems actually started it in
the past.and then i tought they went away
then i started getting this problem.
i suggest you start eating healthy and
exercising regularly cause what you do
effects you in the future!

All my life Posted: 03-12-08 19:22pm
I've haven't been able to burp all my life
and I'm 50. I do involuntarily burp maybe
twice a year a small unsatisfying amount.
I have found sticking a finger down my
throat to invoke the gag reflex works but
the burp is very loud and embarrassing -
the sound carries throughout the house or
public restroom.
I use Gas-X & antigas pills which help
to prevent build up in the stomach so that
flatulence happens sooner (and can be
controlled enough to go to the restroom).
But in the short-term, the gurgling and
uncomfortableness is ridiculous.
I doubt it's stress because I don't have
much stress or anxiety and it has never
abated for any reason, except when dieting
because then I don't eat or drink as much,
so there isn't much gas buildup either.
I have never asked a doctor but after
reading these comments, I wonder if there
is any help from them. I am thinking of
going to a ear, nose, & throat doctor
because it seems like it's a throat
problem.
Anyway, I just wanted to say that
over-the-counter anti-gas pills or Gas-X
or Maalox with Gas-X (anything with
significant amounts of simethicone) works
somewhat.

I've always had this problem, went to see
a doctor today and he said it was
gastritis.
Told me to avoid alcohol, smoking,
caffeine, fizzing drinks, stress and
eating crap such curries and chocolate
blabla until the problems calm down and
eventually wear away.
Got prescribed cimetidine tablets which
feel like they're taking some effect so i
suggest you go get it seen to =]

i am amazed at how similar the prior posts
sound to my situation. i have never been
able to just burp - only gurgle burp
involuntarily. it is especially difficult
when drinking beer. i get to a point where
i must go into the rest room and use the
finger trick to get the air out. it is
always so loud and embarrassing. normally
i wad up some tissue to be dull the sound
a bit.
until lately, i havent had much trouble
forcing it this way. but it has made me
vomit a time or too when i thought a
simple (but huge) belch was on its way
out. awful thing to go thru when you dont
expect it.
i recall having stomach pains growing up,
normally when i waited too long to eat.
this has continued into my adult life and
i feel as if i manage it better.
i have never asked a doctor about it. a
million people have tried to teach me how.
someone even bought me "belching powder"
once as a joke.
i honestly think it is just the way i am
built and there is nothing that can be
done about it. i dont suffer from ibs or
ulcers or anything else really.
good luck everyone!
