Iuds: Mirena Vs Paraguard
Posted: 01-17-06 00:28am

I was wondering what everyone's opinion on each type of iud?

I have read the mirena iud uses hormones but you have less bleeding and cramping, also lasts up to 5 yrs. The paraguard iud uses copper and you have heavier bleeding, lasts up to 10 yrs.

Is mirena iud more expensive?

I am 21 and have never had any children. I have problems putting and taking things out of me like the nuvaring but I think I could handle just feeling for the threads once a month. I already have heavy periods so I really don't want heavier periods if I can avoid it.

I'll be going to planned parenthood without any insurance, can anyone give me the costs of everything for each type of iud.

Thanks.

Paragard is less expensive and I have that one. Mirena caused me to have constant spotting and bleeding, which is a side effect that can happen. I got paragard dec 15, the total cost was 335$, mirena is more. Some planned parenthoods offer women deeper discounts if your income is really low, so definately check into that.

I have a family history of stroke and breast cancer and neither one of the pamplets i was given have any mention of this being a risk just wondering if anyone knew a little more than myself

They actually say that you should have kids before you get an IUD. Atleast 2 kids.

I was considering the IUD and decided against it. Google search pregnancy and IUD'S. I think you will go for another type of birth control.

Why would you suggest a different type of bc? IUD's are more effective than other types.

They used to say that you couldn't use them unless you have had kids, but now they say anyone can have them.

Mirena has lower stroke risk because there is no estrogen in it, and Paraguard has no risk at all because it has no hormones in it. Both are considered safe for people at risk for these types of things.

That information is very outdated and modern research shows it is totally fine for women who are teens and those who have never given birth can be given IUDs and be perfectly fine. In the 70's IUDs were less advanced and that's why they caused problems for women who'd never given birth.

Yes, the old stigma against women who've never had children is slowly going away as IUD technology is much more advanced than it was in the beginning. It's now just as safe for women who've never had children to get one as it is for a woman who does have children. Even teens can get one!

I have had the Mirena for a little over a year now.
It made me bleed straight for 7 months. Now I cramp all the time and spot all the time.
But I also want to point out that it works differently for each woman.
You could have no side effects at all....

There isn't any requirement to have children before an IUD/IUS, as Eiri said that's outdated now.

I haven't had a copper coil as I suffered heavy periods and was advised against it but had (and adored) the mirena coil.

Everyone is different though so I'd have a chat with your doc first and then go with whatever you feel most comfortable with.

I work for planned parenthood, we insert the paraguard. If you live in Texas APPLY for the Women's Health Program they pay for it completely at Planned Parent Hood. However we do have a program in which it gives it to you at a big discount. Do a search for Planned Parenthood in your area and check into it. ITS WORTH LOOKING INTO!!!

However I have the mirena...I love it...I am looking into pricing because in about a year I have to have it replaced. I only spotted for about 3 months. I do have occasional cramping. But other then that I love it. I have not had a period in about 3 1/2 years!

If you want more information contact us at 432-580-7404! AND we can give you phone number of a local planned parenthood in your area!!
