Lamictal, Just Diagnosed Bipolar 1 Posted: 01-17-06 02:49am
I am 27 years old, a mother of a 2 year
old son, and a wife. I was just recently
diagnosed as bipolar and my pysch
prescribed lamictal. I have only been on
it 4 days as of yesterday. I noticed the
the day after my first dose I just feel
bla. I don't feel good about myself, and
am wondering if this medication is right
for me. Also wondering if anyone has had
a similar reaction and if it went away.
I plan on seeing my pysch to see what he
thinks and maybe to chat with him a
little. I do feel a little weird about
all of this. I just want to be truly
happy again and be some what normal. If
anyone could help that would be great. I
am trying to develope as much support as I
can. Try to laugh about it. I feel
like my husband doesn't quite get me.
Guess I just need help all the way
around.
Thanks. :?

My husband is bipolar ii (and borderline)
and takes lamictal. He says that the
first few days after he started it, or had
his dosage adjusted he felt a little weird
and blah, but after a week or so that
feeling passed.
Definitely let your doctor know. Are you
journaling this sort of thing? That
would be very helpful information.
I was unaware that lamictal was indicated
for bp i.

Thanks for the reply, I still am trying to
do research on the different levels of
bipolar. My psysch suggested a book
called "a unquiet mind."
i will definetley start a journal. That
is a very good idea. I will also let my
psych know how if feel right now. I am
really terrified I think of this new
situation. I always thought I just had
some depression issues for the last 6-7
years. I just started feeling different
at times. I just want to get better.
Thanks again. It does help. Not alot of
people I can talk to about this.

I Dont Think Lamictal Is Good Posted: 02-01-06 15:51pm
Hi, I was diagnosed bipolar in the summer
of 2004. I first went through a mania
and then got depressed a few months later.
I was depressed for over five months and
then I lost my dad to suicide, he was also
bipolar. Anyways, we both were on
lamictal and so many other
anti-depressants. Unfortantly, he never
found one that was helpful. I have tried
effixor, abilify, lithium, welbutrin,
adderall and a few others - until I found
one that worked. The only one that
worked for me was adderall and lithium.
Adderall can be dangerous though since it
is an amphedimine and with me (it makes me
have no appetite). Anyways, I finally
have felt like myself for over 7 months.
Im more talkative, social, focused, happy
and have goals again.
Everyone is different and with
psychiatrists it is sometimes all trial
and error when finding a medication that
is right for someone. The only reason I
am anti-lamictal is becasue it did not
work for me and my dad had been on
lamictal for only two weeks before he took
his own life.
Sorry to be a downer...I didnt mean to
turn this into a suicide/depressing
response.

Thank you for the info. I am now going
on week 4 of lamictal trying to give it a
chance. Not for sure that it is working
all that well. I still seem really
irritable and cranky. I see my pysch in
a couple of weeks I also notice that I am
gaining weight with this one. The extra
weight doesn't help any issues that I have
. Thanks for the reply. Sorry about
your dad. Losing a parent is really
difficult.

My bp son started lamicatal 2 months ago
and says it is the best he has felt in
years. He also takes serquel and another
antidepressant but it took time to reach
his target dose.
