Newbie In Wi Considering Pregnancy With Bp
Posted: 01-18-06 01:50am

Hi, my name is jessica and i'm 25 y/o. I was diagnosed w/ bipolar this past october about 3 days after returning from my honeymoon. My husband and I had previously discussed trying to get pregnant after a year. Then I found out about my bp and went on lamictal. I am seriously concerned about getting pregnant on medication. I don't like the risks of defects to an unborn child.

I have thought about going off meds during pregnancy, but I don't know what that would do, I know it's a risk too. But i've also heard that there is a possibility that being pregnant with bp can also even you out so to speak.

I am not sure what to do.... And any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Rose,

i have also just been diagnosed as being bipolar 1 and was prescribed lamictal. ( I have been on it now for about a week, but have been on and off many antidepressants). My pysch. Told me that there is no harm in getting pregnant while on lamictal. He said that there actually have been studies that have shown decrease in birth defects in women who take this while being pregnant. I think not taking any meds would be worse. Try not to stop taking them. I have a son that is going on 2. I was taking zoloft while I was pregnant, instead of pregnancy easying my symptoms they made the worse. I hope this helps if you have any questions or concerns feel free to type me. I am new to this and still trying to figure things out.

Weez,

sorry to hear about your nieces miscarriage. I had a friend who had a miscarriage a couple of months ago, depression hit her really hard. If she is bp anyway on not on any medications there is a good chance she is going to be or already is depressed. Try to listen to her concerns and feelings. She really should talk to someone wether it is family, friend, maybe a pysch. I see one and it seems to help. Sometimes my family and friends don't quite understand what is going on and their way of helping seems to make things worse. All medications need to be taken, it took me awhile to learn that. If there is anymore I can do or say, please feel free to ask.

Something Else On Bipolar And Child-rearing. Help!
Posted: 04-21-06 20:47pm

This isn't about the discussion at hand, nor do I expect anyone with bipolar to be the same. But please read. Please help!! Thank-you.

There's some one I know who has bipolar and physically abuses her child. The family doesn't do anything about her -- they know, but are in denial. They don't do anything about the child. This girl is so crazy, she gets the police involved in everything so ppl around her, if they aren't related, find themselves getting arrested when she's the cause of everything. I don't want to see the child suffer -- this person is incapable of taking care of herself, let alone any living thing around her -- she's vicious. Do I just go on life with blinders over my eyes? Please help!
