How Soon Can You Know the Sex? Posted: 01-19-06 01:28am
Hey friends,
i am 12 weeks and 5 days and I have an
appointment on feb 10th, I will be 15
weeks and 5 days then.
Background info:
i am living in china and it is illegal for
them to tell you the sex of the baby,
because of the one child policy, everyone
wants boys and if it's a girl it is likely
that they will abort the baby.
Anyways, my appointment on feb 10th is in
thailand and we are really hoping to find
out the sex of the baby then because we
will come back to china after that and
stay here until the 8th month.
So, my question is, how soon can they tell
if our child will be a boy or a girl?
Will 15 weeks 5 days be too soon?
Thanks for any help you can give!!!

Hey! I found out when I was 19 weeks. I
have heard of someone finding out when she
was 16 weeks but I hear that it might be
difficult to see.
Either way, you can always try!

Normally your obgyn will schedule your
first ultrasound around week 20 of
pregnancy. By this time the outter
reproductive tissues are well formed in
the fetus.
While it is possible in some cases to tell
the sex of the baby before then, there is
also a higher level of error. Due to a
spotting incident, and an ovarian cyst, I
had an ultrasound when I was about 15
weeks along. The technician said that it
looked like a girl, but not to take that
as a final determination, because it was
still a little early to tell. At my
ultrasound when I was 21 weeks it did
indeed turn out to be a girl. However, I
know of many people who were told there
baby was on sex, only to be surprised when
it was born.
Typically in a fetus, the gonads or
ovaries don't even start to fully form
until around week 16. Then the gonads in
a boy don't even begin to drop to the
outside until around week 28. So if you
do have a boy you will only see its penis.
It really is interesting how the
reproductive tissues form. Every fetus
starts off with a tiny little nub and two
flaps of skin between their legs. The
sperm that fertilized the egg held
chromosones to determine the sex. The
chromosones then determine which hormone
there is more of, estrogen for girls, or
testosterone for boys.
If the fetus is to become a girl, the
higher level of estrogen hormones tells
the little nub to become her clitoris,
while the two flaps of skin become her
outter labia. If the fetus is to become a
boy, then the higher levels of
testosterone tell little nub to grow to
become the penis, and the two flaps of
skin become the sacks that hold the
testicles.
There is a little video about this on the
www.Discovery.Com
web site, under their health, and then
pregnancy section. It is very interesting
to watch.

I know that now days with better
technology, that the sex can be determined
early, and personally I have never heard
from a Dr. Or a book, or anyone else
about not being able to determine the sex
until 28 weeks, that is rediculous, it may
be eaiser to see on a normal u/s by then,
but it really depends on how experianced
the tech is who is doing the u/s and what
type of u/s you are having done, such as a
3d or a 4d you can see the sex as early as
16 weeks, and 15 weeks and 5 days, I think
they might beable to tell, if they are
looking closely!!!

My friend said that she was 12 weeks 5
days when they told her that there was a
baby boy in there. I work with her and I
saw the us picture and you could see his
little whatever.
Dont' get your hopes up, hers was done at
a specalist office and maybe their
technology was alot better than most. I
found out at 18 weeks.

I found out at 15 weeks 6 days....You can
tell as early as 14 weeks but the
sonographer needs to be very skilled and
the baby needs to cooperate also the
ultrasound machine needs to be high tech
so that it can in turn show a clear view
of the sex organ..I'm was told I was havin
a boy and then
i got that confirmed at my 20 weeks 2 day
level ii ultrasound....Good luck!!!

I have been told (and read) that they can
tell you the sex at the 18-20 weeks
ultrasound. I am sure you can earlier
(with less accuracy), but I know some
people that go in for their 18 week
ultrasound, and they are sometimes unable
to tell at that point (depends how the
baby is positioned)
good luck
