what sets us apart, the common mortals
from the geniuses of albert einstein, c.V.
Raman and our own president abdul kalam
is the ubiquitous grey matter. This
tissue in the brain is endowed with nerve
coordination and intellectual powers and
is the driving force for the personality
we are in all spheres, physically,
mentally, socially and spiritually too.
But the logistics of nutrition to each
cell of the brain is carried by the blood
as it is to any other part of the body.
The stoppage or blockage of blood supply
to any part of the brain leading to
temporary or partial cessation of function
of the brain is called as a stroke.
What happens during a stroke?
Our blood has the capacity of clotting
whenever there is a cut or a wound or the
same property whenever it comes across a
rough surface.
So when it encounters such a situation in
the body it forms a clot and the same can
be dislodged and enter the brain and cause
a blockage of the blood vessel supplying
to that part and within few minutes the
same stops functioning and if it remains
for more than three hours the damage in
the brain can be irreparable. If the clot
is blocking say the portions which take
care of speech, movement and memory the
same will be affected.
Types of stroke:
ischaemic stroke:
our brain depends on the fresh blood rich
in oxygen brought by heart and lungs
through the arteries. If the artery is
blocked that part of the brain ceases to
function and is called as ischaemic
stroke.
Causes of ischaemic stroke:
- the blood vessels in the neck and head
can be blocked due to fatty deposits of
cholesterol and reduce the blood supply to
the brain.
- the blood cells can sometimes clot over
these deposits get dislodged and block an
artery of the brain causing stroke.
- in diseases like atrial fibrillation or
abnormal heart valves also blood clots
could form and travel to the brain.
- other causes are injuries to blood
vessels of neck or abnormal clotting
mechanisms.
- in 50% of cases the embolus could be
formed in the arteries of the brain
itself.
Intracerebral haemorrhage:
sometimes the diseased blood vessel in the
brain could burst and ooze out the blood
into the inside causing increase of
pressure thereby causing damage to brain
cells surrounding the blood. But if the
oozing does not stop the pressure could
increase so much as to cause
unconsciousness or even death.
Causes:
+ hypertension or high blood pressure is
the commonest cause of this type of
stroke.
In people who are not aware that they have
high blood pressure or those who neglect
to take their medication for the same this
episodes are very common.
+ less common causes are head injuries,
tumors, infections, blood clotting
deficiencies and abnormalities in blood
vessels.
Subarachnoid haemorrhage:
the space between the outer covering of
the brain and the skull is called as
subarachnoid space. Any leakage of blood
from the arteries in this space causing
pressure on the internal structures of the
brain is called as subarachnoid
haemorrhage. This pressure also can cause
all the typical symptoms of stroke.
Causes:
abnormalities of structure of arteries is
called as cerebral aneurysm and since the
shape is incongruous, tends to burst
easily leading to haemorrhage. The cause
of these aneurysms is not known but
usually is there since birth.
Who is at risk?
Ischaemic stroke constitutes about 88% of
all patients of stroke and is more in
people above 60 years of age, the
occurrence is more in men than in women.
It is also high in people with
hypertension, diabetes, heart disease and
who tend to smoke.
Symptoms&warning signs of stroke:
* the most common sign of stroke is sudden
weakness of face, arm or leg, most
often on one side of the body.
* sudden numbness of the face, arm or leg
especially on one side of the body.
* sudden confusion, trouble speaking or
understanding speech.
* sudden trouble seeing in one or both the
eyes.
* sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss
of balance or coordination.
* sudden severe headache with no known
cause.
Prevention of stroke:
if you smoke stop.
keep blood pressure and cholesterol
down.
do not skip medication for diabetes
and hypertension.
reduce intake of saturated fats.
try to lose extra weight.
avoid excess alcohol consumption.
eat plenty of fruits.
Diagnosis:
an mri will clearly show the
occurrence of bleeding and the areas of
pressure on the brain structures.
doppler of carotids will reveal if
there are any fatty deposits.
an echocardiogram will show any
abnormal leaflets of heart etc.
What can homoeopathy do?
Clot busting drugs are administered by
allopaths and complementarily homoeopathic
medicines with capacity to stop bleeding
and resumption of blood from the spaces
should be done immediately as speed is the
name of the game here. Conditions where
treatment is done within three hours of
appearance of symptoms recover easily and
fully well.
Homoeopathy can also treat the causes of
this problem.
hypertension can be controlled.
side effects of diabetes can be
prevented.
decrease in blood supply to the brain
due to occlusion by fatty deposits in
vessels of the neck can be helped by
increasing perfusion with medication.
abnormal beats of heart or atrial
fibrillation can be treated.
Homoeopathy also has excellent remedies
for rehabilitation.
