I always thought a water birth would be so great! I don't think it would take away all the pain for the mother so much or make the stress a whole lot less for the baby. The baby has to push hard to get through ...That's why they call it labor. The main reason I would do a water birth is to make the shock of leaving the womb less tramatic on the baby. They are tightly enveloped in a dark warm watery substance for nine months and then kicked into an environment where there are very bright lights, cold, and they have to use their lungs for the first time. And with traditional birthing, the mother is "confined" to one position where gravity isn't being utilized to her advantage. With a water birth, the lighting is subdued, and the environment is more familiar as they come up for their first breath, and you are allowed to be in a more natural position for childbirthing.

I've never heard of a baby drowning during this process. In fact their lungs are never used before their birth, and babies are still attached to the placenta where they get oxygen. That's usually why the doc does what he does to initiate a cry response for the first time if they don't do it on their own... To encourage their lungs to fill up with air for the first time. It sounds pretty safe to me.

My friend had a water birth and she let me watch her video tape of it. She looked like she was in a lot of pain. But with her first pregnancy she didnt have a good hospital experience . She said she liked the water birth better. I guess it is a personal preference. I think the whole idea sounds really cool but the main drawback for me is not having any pain meds. I dont have a very high tolerance for pain. But some women have less pain than others, I think.
