Q: Pregnancy Testing During the Period

First of all, pardon my ignorance please.

My boyfriend and I have been extra careful regarding our sex-life. We have always used condoms and pull-out method. However, due to paranoia, we purchased pregnancy tests. We last had sex about a week ago.

The results turned out to be positive. I have no idea why. My period was supposed to start today (sunday), but it started on thursday. On friday night, it ended abruptly. I tested myself twice today and both times it came out to be positive.

Is it okay to test yourself for pregnancy during your period and does it yeild correct results? I know the test said I can test it 6 days after conception. Just wondering if I am pregnant...

Please help. Thank you.

God bless you all.

I would say that if they came out positive then you are. I wouldn't think that "the time of your cycle" would have any affect. Did you guys always use condoms? I know you said you used the "pull out method", but I didn't know if you used that and a condom.

It would probably be best to have it confirmed by a doctor thru a blood test. However, I would say you are are based on the fact that all of your tests came out positive.

Yes. We use condoms plus the pullout method.

I'm pretty sure that your period wouldn't cause a positive result unless you were indeed pregnant. Those tests are based on the hcg level in your urine and unless you were pregnant the test wouldn't detect any hcg level at all. So it seems to me that your pregnant, or maybe your period could've been a miscarriage and you still had hcg in your urine.. I think you should go to the doctor and see what they can do.

actually, I think I can narrow it down to two. Either a week ago, or 15 days ago. Definately, not before that but we hadn't seen each other for a a month or so.

What do you think about it all? Are you in shock? I mean, I guess I am after reading that you were so cautious about your birth control methods. That is scary how it happened. I mean if you were relying only on the pull out method, I could see how you could be pregnant, but since you coupled it with the use of condoms, that is shocking! I am on the pill, and I get to be paranoid here and there even though I take it at the same time everyday!

I am pretty shocked. But my boyfriend and I talked about it last night and this morning. We will go through with this together, you know. If I am pregnant, then it's rather useless to look back and get bogged down in the past. You have to look at the future, I think, and see how to adjust your life to the circumstances at hand. But I will call the clinic tomorrow and see if I can go for a blood-test. If it turns out to be positive, then we prepare for the future.

Yeah I understand! I wish you the best of luck! Sounds like you are pretty level-headed through all of this.
