Working Out to Keep Fit With Tmj Question (from Aussiev) Posted: 02-02-06 05:51am
Hi everyone,
i was just wondering - I am a tmj sufferer
(refer to my first post 'tmj sufferer
would like some insight please!') and i've
always kept myself fit.
Over the last 1.5yrs I haven't done as
much activity but I still walk quite fast
on a treadmill I have at home, about
1.5hrs walk, 3-4 times a week.
My question is, is this ok to do so? I
dont experience tmj pain, only stiffness
and less mobility in my jaw... What do
you all think? Can I keep myself fit and
even loose some weight with faster &
longer walking? Its not like I feel worse
after I get off the treadmill in regards
to my jaw... Or could I be doing damage
that I just dont know of yet...
Cheers from aussieland v

im truely suprized that no one has
answered you on this. i havent been around
much lately or id have answered. its ok to
do as long as you are not bouncing your
head and neck area. any exercise that puts
stress on your head and neck is usually
something to be avoided.

I've been into fitness for a while, weight
lifting, running, swimming and other
activities. I suspect that I've had TMJ to
some extent for at least a few years, I
think it progressively got worse until the
last 6 months when it became a major
problem for me, I was diagnosed by a
general doctor and finally just got a
splint in a week ago.
I definitely know that TMJ affected my
ability and desire to workout. During the
last month or so when the pain was getting
really bad I was fairly inactive because
any strenuous exercise mad the pain and
swelling worse. Now that I am finally
adjusting to the splint I feel like
exercising again and am going to gradually
start a strenuous exercise program. If you
don't already have a splint made by a
dentist or orthodontist I would definitely
recommend getting one as it helps a lot
with the pain by putting your jaw in a
better position to keep pressure off the
TMJ joint.

absolutely cali+_guy You may want to take
it easy too and see what aggravates it and
then avoid it ---you can go back later and
see if you can do it at a later date. I
know that there were things years ago that
I couldnt do but can now as a result of
treatments.
