Im not a doctor or anything , but I am 7 weeks pregnant and during my 4th week I spotted a bit. It is normal, but my doctor made me go get blood tests anyways to make sure everything was ok. So I would just go to your doctor to be safe than sorry.

Would the test have shown negative maybe because I took it too early?

Thats possibl.E but then thats rea lly no reason for the spotting. Id just go to the doctor hun. Then it'll get it off ur mind. Its totally confidential etc. So if u dont want ur parents to know anything they wont. :)
good luck!
