Stupid Germs Posted: 02-05-06 22:03pm
Hi all. Unfortunately, I think i'm
starting to come down with something.
I've been stuffy the past few days but
felt fine... Talked to some people who
are/have been preggy and was told being
stuffy is normal. Has something to do
with changed/decreased blood flow or
something.
Anyway, this morning, I felt a little off,
and now my throat is not sore but dry and
scratchy. I'm still stuffy, too, but my
nose is running a little more.
My question is, does anyone know of any
medicine that is safe for me to take? I'm
going in for a checkup tomorrow, and i'm
sure I can ask then, but i'd like to be
able to take something tonight before bed
if possible.
Thanks!

I'm not sure. My doc said tylenol but I
don't take that since my family doesn't
seem to respond well to it. They told me
when I was sick was pretty much just like
home remedies, like a humidifier or a
steamy shower, tea w/honey and lemon. It
seems like nothing is safe anymore if
you're pregnant.

you can take regular sudafed (in the red
& white box) and regular tylenol.
You can also use saline mist spray for
your nose. You really shouldn't use
anything else.
If it's pregnancy congestion (which I had
for 2 of my pregnancies and didn't get rid
of until after delivery) there's really
nothing you can do about it.

gosh, I don't know if I would recommend
just anyone who is especially pregnant to
take the "regular sudafed", I am not
pregnant, but that stuff makes my heart
race and palpitate, and it also makes me
anxious. I have known several people this
has happened to. Just be careful, and
definitely get a doctor's approval!! Most
doctors I have known have told their
patients who are pregnant, that tylenol is
a safe bet, provided that you don't have
any unfavorable reactions to it.

i agree to get a dr's approval, but I back
up my pp. In all 3 of my pregnancies the
only cold med that was approved was
regular sudafed. It can increase your
blood pressure and your heart rate, but
that's a risk with any cold meds you take
at any time. It affects everyone
differently, but it's common knowledge
that sudafed is considered safe for use
during pregnancy.

please read this before taking
sudafed!!!!!!
New study released!
let's start with the bottom line: it is
best to abstain from the use of all
medications, drugs, smoking and alcohol
during pregnancy.
In a pregnant woman with no medical
complications, the common cold is rarely a
problem. However, lack of sleep,
congestion, cough, fatigue and discomfort
can all take their toll. Some natural
ways to cope with symptoms of the common
cold are: use of a humidifier or steam,
saline nose drops for a stuffy nose,
saline gargle for sore or itchy throat,
chicken soup and rest.
Page two: find out if pseudoephedrine is
safe during pregnancy
page three: read more about a potential
risk of pseudoephedrine use during
pregnancy
for years, health care providers have felt
comfortable recommending pseudoephedrine
(sudafed) for congestion, guaifenesin
(robitussin) for cough and acetaminophen
(tylenol) for pain. Lately, however,
pseudoephedrine has received some
additional scrutiny, and, for the time
being at least, should no longer be
offered to pregnant women without a
"risk/benefit" discussion. Use of
pseudoephedrine should be reserved for
severe congestion that significantly
impacts sleep and quality of life, and it
may not be appropriate for use in the
first trimester of pregnancy.
It is important that you speak with your
health care provider about any symptoms
that you feel need treatment. Only your
own midwife or doctor knows you well
enough, and knows your situation well
enough, to recommend the use of any drug
during pregnancy. Some medical
conditions adversely affect the pregnancy
-- some so seriously that medication, even
that which has not been proven absolutely
safe, needs to be administered. But it
is not the time to self-treat for
anything.

I was told that sudafed wasn't safe.

I was told by my ob_gyn it was ok to take
robatussin(spelling) and
bynadryll(spelling) in a list that was
provided by my provider. I was suprised
that it was ok to take that. But check
with our provider before you take
anything.

Thanks for the replies.
I actually got a list from my ob today
about what was safe to take for lots of
things from colds to muscle pain to coughs
to hemrhoids (sp). The list (and two
doctors I talked to) said tylenol sinus is
fine to take.
Could I have gotten through the cold
without taking anything? Of course. But
my problem is that my head has been so
stopped up that it's painful (the
congestion is so bad that it makes my ears
hurt), and I can't sleep. And i'm sorry,
but hot showers, tea, blah blah blah might
work ok, but it's not going to be good
enough to fix this. Serously, last night
I was awake until 7 this morning. I
actually won't take the medicine until i'm
going to bed, so that at least limits it
to only once a day until i'm well enough
to sleep on my own.
