Help With Effects of the Pill
Posted: 02-06-06 07:07am

I have been on the pill for just over a week and started on the first day of my period. However,i have noticed brown discharge and was wondering if this is normal as it's really getting me down. Also,me and my boyfriend had sex without using a condom for the first time, although I was on the pill, and afterwards I had a burning sort of sensation for quite a while and was wondering what it could be. Would be very grateful if anyone has experienced similar things and had some advice or help, thanks.

Your discharge is normal, as the pill has hormones that your body is adjusting to. Your period may become lighter and shorter as well.
You said you've been on the pill for just over a week: when did you and your boyfriend have sex without the condom? I believe bc becomes effective (generally) after one week on the pill.

As for your burning sensation...Were the condoms you used lubricated? One reason for foreplay is to ensure that the woman's vagina creates lubrication (and it's fun too!). If you were not "wet" enough, you might have caused some irritation or slight tearing. It's nothing to worry about right now. The burning should go away on its own, but just take it easy for a few days (i had this problem for a while when I first starting having sex). You might want to try buying a lubricant. I recommend astroglide (i do not recommend the "warming" lubricants).
But if the sensation doesn't go away, go see your doctor.

Pill Problems

Hi,yeah it was lubricated, the same ones we are used to using and that was the first time it happened.According to the instructions that came with the pill, and my doctor,if taken on the first day of your period you are protected straight away,it was 5 days after I started.Do you think the burning has anything to do with the fact that I haven't been on the pill long? The burning went away after about half an hour.If my problems persist me and my boyfriend plan to see my doctor.
Thanks

I thought for every kind of birth control pill it took at least one week for it to become effective - however, you might be on one I have never heard of.
I don't think the burning is associated with the pill. I suggest you try using a little bit of lubricant to see how that works, especially since the condoms you had been using were lubricated. Sometimes a little bit of bacteria gets inside you during sex as well, so it's recommended you urinate before and after sex.
