Q: Two Positive Pregnancy Tests, Two Negative Blood Tests!!!

Hello,

i am wondering if someone can provide insight/comments/ experience/encouragement to me concerning my very complex situation.

I am a newleywed. I just got married on november 8, 2003. I was ending my period on the honeymoon, making the first day of my last period (day 1 of my cycle) november 4.

Ever since the honeymoon, I haven't felt right. I have a million and one weird symptoms. Fatigue, emotional, nauseous, weird cravings, blue veins on my body esp. Breasts, upper chest, stomach, lots of salivation, hungry often, very sensitive feelings on my body/sensitive skin (the nerves?), feeling like I am going to get my period, etc. Just to name a few.

So the day before thanksgiving, on the urging of my new husband, I took a first response early pregnancy test. It was faintly positive, but here is the catch. The line was slightly outside the "test window." I was concerned so I called the 800 number on the box, and the lady confirmed that it sounded like a positive result to her.

I subsequently went to the family doc. She ordered a blood test. While waiting for the results, I took yet another first response home test, and this time, the line was light, however it was undeniably positive --- the line was in the test window this time and everything looked normal. The doctor called with results to my blood test --- it was negative! Because of this, she asked me to have another blood test done, which I did. The second was negative as well. All this was done before I even skipped a period, because the timing is all off (i may have gotten pregnant at the very end of my period). Embarassed

i had some spotting for a couple days a few days to a week before I expected to receive my period. Now, yesterday and today, i've had weird, brown discharge when I wipe (could be because of recent sexual activity?).

Is this all possible? Question is there anyone out there that experienced a similar thing? Someone told me that you can't have an accurate positive hpt with a neg blood test... Yet I have found a few places on the net which state that some people don't make enough hcg to be detected in a blood test... Yet I got two positive home tests.

Idea this is all such a complicated mess... The good news, I see the midwife at the local obgyn center this tuesday at 1:30 pm.

I just wanted to see if anyone has had similar experiences. Any and all comments would be appreciated. I've been in such turmoil and so emotional lately because of all this... Which isn't like me.

Thank you so much!! Laughing

The brown discharge your describing sounds like implantation bleeding or spotting. Usually it's the home ept's that prove incorrect and a blood test should have been accurate by now....To be honest I haven't been in this type of situation so i'm not sure what to say! Why not wait it out for a few weeks and if you continue to not get your period then order another blood test. Sorry can't be of much help! Try not to stress and hang in there. Keep us updated!
Much luck

From Brown to More Red
Thanks for replying!

Today, the brown discharge has become more red and slightly more in volume (still not a ton and not like my normal period). I don't know how this could be since I first spotted only like 2-3 weeks ago. And I have an unusually long cycle so I am not used to having to use 'feminine hygiene products' so often in one month! Ha ha

the more I research and think about things, the more I think that I had what I guess they call a "chemical pregnancy." meaning, there was a fertilized egg, but it either didn't implant (blighted ovum) or, if it did, something wasn't right so it will be expelled by way of menstruation... Which could be why I have been getting a (sorta) period sooner than normal.

Well, I will know tomorrow what is up when I go to the midwife at the obgyn center.

I wanted to post all this in case there is someone out there with a similar situation that may need help or want to compare notes... Or who could be of help or encouragement to me.

Keep the replies coming, I appreciate it! Will keep you posted...

It does sound to me like perhaps you had some type of miscarriage. You should have an exam/ultrasound done with your ob.

Miscarriage?
Yeah, that is kind of what I am thinking. Crying or Very sad but, in a way, I am relieved. I would like to be married for a little bit before having to deal with all this. There has just been so much going on in my life and the lives of my family. My sister-in-law is also pregnant and my sister is pregnant with sextuplets! Surprised I also have another sister that just experienced a blighted ovum.

Having just gotten married, started a new job, and many other things, I think being pregnant for 9 mo. Would add so much more to the mix. Don't get me wrong, if I go to my appt. Tomorrow, and they say that I am pregnant, I would be happy with that too. Fortunately, I am content with whatever outcome I receive.

Again, continue to reply --- I appreciate any comments, insight, or encouragement about this.

Thanks everyone! You've been great... Smile

I don't appreciate you following me around and replying to my posts. If you can't be a mature person and leave edifying and encouraging or helpful replies, then I suggest you go somewhere else on the internet where people appreciate disturbing and rude comments.

I also didn't appreciate your comment to the lady who was wondering about discharge from her nipples. Please grow up. Thank you.

My sister-in-law experienced something similar too. The home pregnancy test had the positive line but it was very faire. She got a blood test done also and it came back negative. Her doctr said that the reason why she tested positive in the urine teat was because she was indeed pregnant, but the blood test came back negative because the hcg hormone level was barely dectectable in the blood, meaning she had had a miscarriage. Good luck with your appointemnt tommorrow. Hope things turn out the way you really want them to turn out.

I think that maybe you should try and get an ultrasound. That would be the only sure way to see if you are currently pregg.
Good luck

Miscarriage
Well, late last night I had to go to the hospital and I was there overnight because of bleeding. They did an ultrasound and everything. It looks like I did have a miscarriage. They think it may be due to an imbalance in the hormans necessary for housing an embryo. So, I have an appointment the end of january to get the situation looked into.

I am sort of relieved... Now I know what is going on, most questions are answered, and I can get my life back to normal. Physically, I feel much better too. Not all those nasty symptoms that were making me feel sick for so long. Mentally and emotionally I am doing okay too.

I am still bleeding, but that will go away with time, and things should get back on track.

Thanks to all who replied. I appreciate feedback very much. Smile

I'm incredibly sorry for your miscarriage however you seem very strong and are taking it well. At least like you said you know whats going on and now that your doctor's have an idea of your imbalance they may be able to get you on medication that will help you sustain an embryo. I wish you the best of luck in the future!

Thanks tanya, I appreciate your kind words. I am trying to be strong. I am sort of sick of people asking me about it and saying how sorry they are, because I am the type that just wants to be let alone and move on immediately. Oh well, they all mean well. But, it is easier to talk with people here on the forum like you and others for some reason. This has been very theraputic! Smile

anyway, I am sure I will be following up on my situation as it progresses.

Still, if there is anyone else that had a situation similar to mine and has a hormone imbalance, etc. I would love to hear your thoughts and find out about your situation. Thanks!!

Well, unfortunately, if it is a hormonal problem, there really isn't anything you can do, from what I understand. I'd like to hear more about your particular situation. Then, maybe I could off more advice from my experience.

I know about your loss and congrats on your new hubby but I was wondering if you could answer a question for me. When you bled during the night you went to the hospital, was it an extreme amount of blood? I was wondering because I spotted a little about a week ago but not a lot and I was just worried and looking for some insight!
I hope everythinng goes well for you in the future!

Jennifer...
Well, about two weeks before it happened, I spotted brown and pink stuff that gradually was sorta red for a short time. This lasted about 4 days or so off and on. I didn't think too much about it at the time.

Then this last time it was really weird brown discharge for a couple days and the night I went to the hospital it turned really dark red (the darkest I have ever seen) and I had clots and stringy, fleshy looking things.. Just "odd" things that I have never seen. It wasn't as heavy as I thought it would be, but it was enough - ha ha. Everyone is probably different, just like with anything else. I think the quantity depends on the pregnancy, how far advanced it was, and other variables. I also had like weird, nagging pains mostly on my right side that kind of went up and down my whole body... My neck and shoulders down to my lower abdomen and down my leg to my foot... And also in my lower back.

Hope this helps and thanks for your comments! Let me know if I can help further. Smile

i had a positive first responce as well, went for blood test which come back negative. They made me an appointment for more hormone testings to see if something was going on,a week later I decided to take another first responce which was also positive I went back to doctor and was 4 weeks pregnant. They had no explanation why blood test was negative. So maybe you are just not far enough along yet.Try to find a doctor that will use a vaginal ultrasound and then they will know foresure.
