Pacifiers And Nipple Confusion? Posted: 02-11-06 14:21pm
Hey guys, do any of you know if giving a
baby a bippy (pacifier) will cause nipple
confusion if you breast feed? Just
wondering bcos I plan on breastfeeding and
i'm reading all that I can, but I can't
find anything on bippies. They say a
bottle before breastfeeding is established
can cause it but nothing at all about
bippies. As far as i'm aware there's no
laleche league hereabouts so I can't ask
them.

My son would not even try and use a
pacifier untill he was 3 months old but
used my pinky finger as a sucking thing.
They have some pacifiers that are shaped
like nipples and that's what I used at
first. They are gerber ones.

My son did not have any troubles. We
allowed him to pick the one he liked best,
(as a 2 day old baby it was a toss up, we
tried about 5 or 6 brands and he chose to
use the nuk ones)
he will not use one at all now, only his
thumb. I did everything I could to keep
him from wanting his thumb, I used the
onsies with the fold over hand things and
even used socks to cover his hands all to
no avail. He wants his thumb.
In my opinion it is best to keep his mind
straight about the difference in bottle
nipples and real ones. We use only the
playtex nurser nipples and I watched
exactly how he was supposed to be on his
moms nipple and I made him do exactly the
same thing to get the bottle in his mouth.
I would not allow him to eat from his
bottle unless his mouth was exactly like
it was supposed to be to nurse from mom.
I've read that it can, and that if you do
plan on using a pacifier and breastfeeding
to wait until the baby is atleast 3-4
months otheriwise it can cause confusion.
I am not sure where I read it but it was
just recently. I will try and find the
article for you.

Yes, I believe you are supposed to wait a
while before introducing the pacifer. It
may interfere with breastfeeding. I
wouldn't take the chance.

i'll get those then to help cut down on
any confusion
anyhoo it seems like the majority of post
say not to go with a bippy until baby is
3-4 months. I hope I can last that
long.
