Tongue/Throat Swelling or Globus Hystericus? Posted: 02-11-06 14:47pm
My mother ( 55) was put into the hospital
last week with swelling of the tounge and
throat. They thought it was a reaction to
Robaxin( back med) and put her on a flush
and meds to bring her adrenalin down. Her
blood pressure etc was all fine. She
came home that night..only to go back
again with the same thing.. and the 2nd dr
there said if the swelling didn;t go down
they would have to put a tube down her
throat. It did, but they admit her.. and
she was in for 4 days.. In that time.. it
happened again.. but nothing they did
could tell them what was causing it? She
said she would get a funny feeling and
then like there was something in her
throat and she had a hard time
swallowing... they ( 4 drs by now) didnt
think it was a reaction to the back
medication.. but not sure what? They sent
her home with an epi pen.. and medication
in case she got the feeling of it
happening again and mentioned it may be
anexity. She has never.. had anexity...
everyday stress but not anexity.. any
thoughs on what may be causing this???
First, your can be examined by an
ENT-specialist to confirm if she really
has a tongue/throat swelling or if she
only thinks that her tongue and throat are
swollen. If the specialist confirms
swelling of the tongue or throat, it is
probably being caused by an allergy or
infection...or both. If there is no
swelling at all, there is a neurotic
disorder called “globus hystericus”
where the patient thinks that there is
something in his throat. You can take your
mother to an ENT-specialist the next time
she feels the same symptoms.
