If my Girlfriend Forgets to Take her Birth Control During he Posted: 02-13-06 14:23pm
This is a bit complicated, so Ill do my
best to provide all the information I can
and keep it simple.
I had sex with my girlfriend three times
in the days around New Years. She is on
birth control (she has it to control her
irregular period, so shes been on it for
years) and we use a condom every time,
without question. On New Years Eve she was
5-6 hours late taking her pill, but we did
not have intercourse until at least 3-4
hours later.
None of the condoms broke visibly, so any
breakage at all would have been a pinpoint
hole. Neither of us ever noticed any
drainage during disposal, though in
hindsight I did not inspect the latex as
closely as I would have liked to.
There was some manual
intercourse/masturbation during that time
period as well, and though I dont remember
as well as she does, she says that we
never performed any such acts where I
would have finished first (ie, not to be
gross... nothing could have gotten on our
hands before they penetrated her).
Now this is where the fun begins. RIGHT
around the time (between one and two weeks
later) that she was, coincidentally, both
due to have her period and due to implant
(if she were pregnant)... she missed two
days of birth control pills. Her thinking
is that she was dreaming she took them.
So she started bleeding a week before her
period was due, and the blood was dark at
first. As we discussed the possibility
that it might be implantation bleeding (as
it was about that time), she thought more
about it and remembered that the blood had
been more of a pure red a few mornings
into the bleeding. She bled for 4-5 days,
which is shorter than her normal period,
but she claims she was having to use
tissues to hold the bleeding at work, and
it was more than just spotting (the
tissues werent soaked, but they were
full). She also released a blood clot, as
she usually does, but she worried because
it was abnormally crescent-shaped.
The next week, she was expecting her
normal period and even got some cramps,
but never actually started bleeding. She
was having breast tenderness and I noticed
some unusually intense food cravings (but
she IS in the habit of snacking regularly
anyway). She concluded a few days later
that, due to her birth control mishap,
what had happened the previous week had
been her period and the present
irregularities were the result of the
birth control confusing her body. It was a
mixture of that confidence and probably
fear that led her to resist taking a
pregnancy test.
After that time, she got less emotional
and if she was in any kind of pain in her
chest or stomach, she didnt tell me as she
usually does (yes, shes very open about
her cycle with me... can you tell?).
Now its February and shes due for period
#2. Over the past week she has definitely
been cramping off and on (right on
schedule), and theyve gotten severe at at
least one point over the past few days
(she was due to switch to placebos and
start bleeding today). Shes definitely
gotten a lot more emotional again, and Im
noticing food cravings. Last night she
mentioned breast sensitivity as well.
But she hasnt said anything to me today
yet about whether she started bleeding,
and Ive read in several places that some
women may have menstrual pain or even
periods, but still be very pregnant. So
the anxiety is back...
In a nutshell: These unfortunate
coincidences, combined with the ambiguity
of symptoms between pregnancy and
periods/birth control changes, has got us
very worried. For myself, Im more worried
than Im admitting to her, for her sake (if
you cant tell by what Im doing here). We
do what we can to be safe, and though we
have a period of uncertainty (no pun
intended) during most every month... all
of these signs this time around are just
too stressful to deal with.
Question: All events considered before the
possible conception and since, what is the
likelihood that she is pregnant?

Missing birth control pills during a
menstrual period CANNOT CAUSE PREGRNANCY.
Irregular bleedings, breasts tenderness,
eating wishes and cramps are not signs of
pregnancy. Further, “implantation
bleeding” doesn’t exist! You might
consider keeping a store of pregnancy test
strips on hand if you are continually
concerned about the risk of your
girlfriend becoming pregnant.
