My Mom Is Having a Hysterectomy Wed Im Scared For Her Posted: 02-19-06 09:28am
She is 49, and getting it all out
including the overies. She has been
emotional and bleeding alot and her
ultrasound showed she was full of fibroid
tumors.
I hear different things from different
people about it being better after one and
some saying worse....
I dont know much about them but I just
wish I could help her get thru this. My
mom is one of my best friends.
Can anyone offer some advice on what to
expect and/or what I can do to help her?

The very best you can do is be there.
Encourage her to do gentle walking once
she is out of hospital as this help the
muscles recover and helps everything
drain.
Be there to help her get up or to lower
herself down.
Discourage her from doing too much too
soon - you only get one chance to heal
properly.
If she is grouchy don't take it personal -
she doesn't mean it and most definately
doesn't mean to hurt you but hysterectomy
can be a very emotional time so for those
first couple weeks if you feel that you
can't do anything right - you are doing it
right but she just needs someone to sound
off at.
Be prepared for tears one minute and
happiness the next then exhaustion.
The best you can give really is patience
and support.
I was fortunate enough to have a very
supportive partner who never took anything
I said to heart.

My mum had a hysterectomy for fibroid
tumours too. I am probably not much help
as this happened while I was young. My
mum got very depressed over it at the time
because she wanted to have more children,
she did her best not to show it to us.
One thing I do remember tho is make sure
she gets plenty of rest . The nurse even
told me my mum was not to lift a shopping
bag or even a kettle for 6 weeks after.
The main thing you can do is to be there
for her and listen as best you can.
Good luck lilypad.
