Drinking And Pregnant
Posted: 02-23-06 10:49am

My friend found out she was pregnant (3 months) and she has been partying. She drinks about 3 times a week (getting drunk) and smokes. She didnt know she was pregnant. Does anyone know the risks?

Hi there.. My sister is an alcoholic, and she did the same when she was pregnant. She now has a son who is fas, and has a heart defect because of it. Anytime you drink while you are pregnant there can be complications and effects on your unborn child. I hope that you can get through to her. Take care.

Thankfully she is stopping with the bad stuff, it will greatly increase the chances of a healthy birth!

If she is not already taking a prenatal, she needs to start asap! If she is like my wife, the prenatals are just simply too harsh on her system so we made our own. We bought womans formula one-a-day (the brand not generic) and also a bottle of folic acid to make it possible for her to get then 1000 mcg/day possible.. The folic acid comes in 400 mcg tablets so she was actually getting 1200 vs. 1000 but it does not harm anything because it is water soluable and so any extra just goes away in the pee.

She really needs to get folic acid and start a good regimine of that asap, it will help to ensure that no problems continue to occur durring her pregnancy.

Good luck to your friend,
brian

Yeah my friend found out she was pregnant about 3 months ago too and she still smokes and goes and gets drunk, it makes me so mad! It'd be differnet if she didn't know she was pregnant or something but she does and she still gets drunk and shes around pot all the time! It's pretty pathetic when you can't stay away from alcohol for 9 months for the sake of your unborn child. :(

The thing with drinking and pregnancy is that there is no scientific research that tells us exactly how much alcohol is too much. Nobody knows, because every woman and her pregnancy is different. A woman might drink only three beers one time early in her pregnancy and have a child with fas and other defects, while another woman can drink like a fish and her baby can be perfectly fine. The same goes for smoking.

Doctors have varying opinions on the effects of alcohol on a fetus after the first trimester. Some say that once you are past the first trimester, the most critical time for a developing fetus, then you are allowed a 4 oz drink once or twice a week to help relax your muscles. Other doctors will say that you shouldn't drink at all anytime during the pregnancy.

Basically it is all a game of russian roulette. Just like with anything else in science, nothing is absolute.

If the baby is born with fetal alcohol syndrome, she will be arrested and lose custody of her little one.

If you are a true friend, you need to report this abuse to whom ever you can that will get her the help she needs to protect this baby.

Drinking and drug abuse are about the worst abuses that you can do to a fetus and it is criminal to do it.

She may have real deep reasons for needing to be drunk and messed up because of emotional issues but it would be better to either abort or stop the bad stuff before a child with horrible health issues and a mom that isn't capable of caring for a sick baby is born.
