Severe Diarrhea, Cramping, and Vomiting...Infection? Posted: 02-25-06 15:41pm
I have a sharp pain & throbbing feeling
(plus constant tenderness) the last two
days directly under the bottom of my lower
left rib cage. When it occurs, it also
affects the right side of my back (like a
cramping feeling). I just took my
temperature & it is below normal (97
degrees). I have experienced both severe
dirarhea & vomiting the last three days,
but haven't yet today. Please advise.
Thank you.
You are probably suffering from stomach
and intestinal inflammation
(gastroenterocolitis) caused by an
infective agent that entered the body
through food or water (alimentary
toxic-infection). I recommend you visit a
doctor. You will have to receive a lot of
liquids and electrolytes to prevent
dehydration. If the vomiting continues you
will have to receive liquids and
electrolytes by intra venous infusion.
Diet is very important for stopping
diarrhea. Sugar and fats are forbidden in
the first days of treatment. An
examination of the feces (coprocultura)
will be requested to identify the
infective agent. Antibiotics usually are
not requested for common bouts of diarrhea
in adults.
