Shoulder/arm Pain Posted: 02-26-06 11:34am
Have just joined this forum. Not sure of
my way around yet.
Last fall I did some very vigorous raking
for about 3 days (not only my own grass,
but was foolish and also did my
sister's.)
since then have had very sore shoulders --
the pain radiates into the upper arm which
results in being unable to sleep, unable
to dress, or lift my arm very high.
Cannot place arm behind body, as this
gives knife-like pain that takes my breath
away.
I do have osteoarthritis of the upper
spine, but do not think that is the
cause.
Don't know where to start; have been
advised to get a cortisone shot.
Physiotherapy has not helped and they seem
to disagree on the problem.
I myself think it is a rotorcuff injury,
and am looking for some really effective
exercises to help.
Anyone have any ideas or similar problem?
Especially -- which exercises to do?
Would appreciate all feedback. Oh yes,
you need to know that I am a 69-year old
female.

You really need to have some diagnostic
testing done, mri/x-ray/ct ect.
You may have a torn rotatorcuff or the
sclerosis on your spine may be causeing
this.
You need to see someone that specialises
in this type of medicine and get some real
treatments. Cortisone/steroid injections
are a great place to start.
If you choose to go ahead with the
injections, do not allow someone to put
the medicine around your spine without the
use of floroscopy, cervical steroid
injections are very routine but can cause
serious irreperalble damage if not done
correctly. The use of floroscopy is
standard and expected anymore and if the
doc does not use this, ask for a refferal
to someone that does use it.
Floroscopy is essentially like real time
tv but it is xrays to watch the needle
placement as it progresses towards the
spine and facets and nerves and other
places. It helps keep the needle in the
right places becaus the doctor can see
exactly where the needle is going.

Hi, i'm back.
The sports doctor sez that sore shoulder
not connected to osteoarthritis; but that
I have "frozen shoulder".
Further, according to him, exercise will
not help, and wants to wait and then do
cortisone treatments. I did not tell him
that I will not have these shots at this
time.
Have been doing slow stretches and slow
exercises for the last 2 weeks, and
shoulder pain is about 60% less, and am
also sleeping now! Found a lot of
marvellous exercises on net for stiff and
painful shoulders. :)
would like to hear from others what they
did for frozen shoulder.
