Anyone Know About Adderall
Posted: 12-30-03 20:08pm

Hi guys! Recently I was diagnosed w/add, comparable to adhd like children are diagnosed with. Now alond w/depression, I have this to battle. The med adderall is suppose to be highly addictive and can cause bad mood swings after the med leaves your system. I'm starting to doubt my doctor, why would he put me on such a med, it is also considered an amphetimine. Now you are probably wondering "why didn't ya just ask him", and the answer is yes, I did, but he assured me that this was the med for me and had nothing to worry about. I am hoping Confused Someone out there can maybe give me some feedback of their own, maybe even someone who has or is taking now! Thanks alot! Kdgray

Try life extension foundation (they do sell stuff but also have alot of useful informatin about illnesses etc that is available without spending a cent!!) - go to a search engine & type this in, also type in adderall & contraindications for adderall, as well as perhaps medications for adult add??

I don't know anything about adderall & in any case everyone reacts differently to each medication & it would depend on other conditions & medications you have too.

Good luck.

Hi kdgray,

i know this may be about a year late, but maybe you still check up here.

I am also currently battling depression and I am addicted to adderall. Addy can truly help people who take it properly according to their exact perscription and don't exceed the amount or change the time of day they are supposed to take it. I made the mistake of not going to a doctor and getting properly diagnosed even though i'm sure I do have add, and would have saved myself a trip to hell. Now I am illegally buying addy to pull all nighters for school and also keep myself from crashing. I now end up taking in one night 4 or 5 pills (10mg) when I began with 1 or 2. That is how your tolerance rises when the drug is misused.

The side effects can get pretty harsh. You lose sleep if you take in too late in the day, becuase it increases your heart rate drastically and stimulates the brain (as all amphetamines do). You lose significant weight because it is an appetite supressant, and it gets very hard to eat, especially if you have body image issues to begin with. You may feel pumped up or euphoric at first, but over time this turns to massive anxiety, which affects some people worse than others. I have this very strongly and it is a terrifying thing to live with. Also, because it is so addictive, especially when abused, it consumes your life- you become dependant on it not only to focus but also to feel as close to normal as possible. The anxiety is still there, btu at least you are motived to get up in the morning. It becomes a terrible cycle which often leads to stronger drugs like coke (heroin in extreme cases) and depression. I have a very detailed personal account on these forums titled "does adderall cause depression"...So if you have time look it up!!! It may clarify some things or maybe even change your mind about getting prescribed!!!

My advice (to anyone considering this medication):

1. Make sure your doctor does not start you off with anything above 10 mg pills (blue ones) no matter how bad you have add. This way you can see if you have a negative/unusual reaction to the addy at a lower dosage (i would even recommend starting with 5 mg ones)

2. If you are prescribed xr addy (timed release- usually orange capsules of 20 mg) make sure you take it in the morning after breakfast, because it lasts very long (atleat 5-7 hours) unlike the regular pills which can fade within 2 hrs. So you won't be hungry or sleepy for a while.

3. Do your best to not pull all nighters on this pill. It messess with your body enough when taken properly, so you can imagine how tired and drained you will feel when its misused. The best way to go is to keep with your time schedule that your doc prescribes. If you are, but still have trouble sleeping, ask him if it would be ok to take the last daily pill an hour earlier than prescribed.

4. Even if you are not hungry, snack on something throughout the day. It is very easy to forget to eat at all on addy and you can end up with an eating disorder. Snack on string cheese or nuts, or yogurt- small things that fill you up but arent heavy like meat.

5. If you begin exhibiting any of the major symptoms of abuse or physical disagreement with the drug (weight loss, insomnia, heavy mood swings, heart palpitations, anxiety, or depression) please immediately tell your doctor. He has to either take you off the meds or significantly lower your dosage. Don't be scared to speak up- it could save your health or even your life!!!!!

Adderall, Abuse, And Cancer
Posted: 02-03-05 16:13pm

I don't know if you are still out there asking about adderall. I take it also occasionally, mainly for work, and not daily. I wouldn't advise most to develop one's own drug schedule. But since I know a lot about adhd drugs (my master's thesis was about that very topic), and I don't abuse the meds, I decide to take adderall when I feel I most need it. When I have a tough project at work, or I have to be super organized and/or super efficient, I take my 20 mg xr (extended release)--better 'cause generally you don't experience the highs and lows of the transitions of the drug taking effect.

Initially when I was diagnosed with adhd (as an adult), I was prescribed everything from ritalin (where I had speedy heart palpatations) to dexedrine (hated it, was nearly anorexic) and adderall (which worked best for me). The only problem I have with adderall is that it really affects my appetite and I have to force myself to eat at times, which is clearly an advantage to some who abuse the drug yearning to lose weight. I would rather stay fit by watching my daily intake (with or with out adderall), and running (which is my main exercise).

Another potential problem, particularly if your dosage is too high, is mood swings, and that sucks! I'd rather walk around adhd'ing it, going with the flow, getting lost occasionally, then speeding about (too high of a dose), not even taking time to use the bathroom, and then having severe withdrawals when i'm not on it. I actually told the doctor, "man, I think I am actually high on this stuff --the dose must be too high for me." he agreed after he heard me described a typical day, and lowered the dose. I was running around, being really efficient at work, but I wouldn't eat all day (i was too focused on the projects at hand). I would wait and wait to pee until I felt my bladder about to burst, and I would avoid all contact with anyone so as to not slow down my work. It was freaky!! So obviously, unless you like these particular effects, pay careful attention to the dose, and listen to your body, please! I wish people would think of the detriment of using these stimulants freely to lose weight, or stay up all night studying--that is abuse, and boy, will it catch up with you. You don't want to be hooked on those drugs, and the physiolgical effects will catch up with you! Any thoughts, anyone? I just became a member because I was astonished at all the messages I read from people who are jonesing for adderall--how sad! And sad that young girls are downing these pills to lose weight.

My fiancee just got treated for cancer and went through radiation and chemo, and lost nearly 50 pounds, and is just now getting off a feeding tube, which kept him alive for a few months during his treatment. He is thankfully recovering now, and is cancer-free! Before his cancer was diagnosed, he had maybe 10 pounds to lose if he had to, but he certainly wasn't considered overweight by american standards. Now he is a walking skeleton, poor thing, and he is trying to eat gradually and gain weight. Since his mouth and neck were radiated, he has chronic dry mouth, has lost all his sense of taste (all his salivary glands were zapped), and has ulcers all over his mouth and tongue, rendering it understandably painful to eat. His taste buds are coming back gradually, but he still can't eat much of what he loves, and you have to know how frustrating that is, living in new orleans where the food is phenomenal. The point is for those of you starving yourselves, and excited that you don't eat when you take adderall, think of my fiancee who would give anything to taste again, and be able to chew and swallow, things you and I take for granted.

The fact that people actually want to intentionally neglect their bodies in order to achieve that starved, malnourished, anorexic "hip" look, is sad and quite shameful. Think of those out there starving and wish they had the food and nutrients some of us are just shunning to achieve a social status (???). I don't want to sound judgemental, I just feel very empassioned about these issues, and I wish we could all just love ourselves and each other a lot more than we do. Love thyself!! I wish the best to all of you out there!

Hi,

mainly, I want to mention that some drugs lower b12... And when b12 is low, depression is a common outcome.

I'm mentioning this because I got brain damage because my b12 was low for too long.

I have a lot of information on my site, that's pretty easy to understand, and I also have excerpts from research there. Click on fingernails.

i love the effects of the drug, I use it for my adhd, and I am focusing very good after starting it.

But the side effects are what make me think its not worth it.

Annoying as hell mouth sores, jaw pain
happened for me

occasional blurryiness of vision (like right before you lose consciousness)

chest hurting.

I would have to aggree with this as probbaly the most accurate side effects, I have been diagnosed ADHD since the late 80's I am about to turn 28. My script is for 15mg XR and I also pick up a 30mg XR script under the table. I am in excellent health, it took a while to get a steady eatting habbit, turns out pot makes me hungry. The ONLY problem I do have is the sores on my cheeks and toung. ( I have been working with my dentist over the last 5 months to smooth out cracks and seal them, it has helped so much ) I just want everyone who hasent taken adderall and thoes who take it as pescribed you DO NOT WANT TO DO THIS it will alter every aspect of your life and not all for the better. I am a programmer and using adderall I will set up a 3 to 4 span of work and play, I have a wife who can also handle this physcally but it drains her mentally. I do not know how I got to this level of usage but I can say the good effects of adderall: focus, memory improvement (finally listening), financial skills (keeping a good checking account) out weigh the bad effects, of which I barely suffer...

Adderall
Posted: 12-20-07 18:07pm

I was put on adderall at the age of 16 to treat my "ADD". I instantly became addicted, not in the sense that I was robbing people to maintain my supply or something, but I have taken it every day since and can feel the effects when I dont take it, tired, hungry, cant concentrate, ect. I am twenty five now and still take it daily, 10 mg, although I can barely feel the effects since I believe I now need a much higher dose to feel the same effects that I felt when I began nearly 10 yrs ago. I have now been diagnosed with thyroid cancer and believe that adderall is the cause. Its bad stuff- I wish i would of just taught my self better skills than to turn to an addictive evil drug.

So, what did the doctor say? You really think the cause of thyroid cancer is from adderall? Can you explain your theory, etc. I'm curious..
