Paranoid And Need Some Reassurance!
Posted: 03-04-06 21:07pm

Hello I am new to the board and need some reassurance to put my mind at ease. I had unprotected sex with a guy I had been dating for 3 months. He was quite healthy but had had many sexual partners before me. Last month I went for my annual pap test and was tested for chlamydia and gonorrhea as well. All tests came back normal. However since then I have been very paranoid about the possibility that I acquired hiv from my encounter. (we are no longer together and havent been for a year). I have had severe pelvic and groin pain for a while. My doctor did 2 urinalysis which came back crystal clear, and a hemoglobin test came back normal as well. He tells me that the pain is due to anxiety which it very well could be because ive been freaking myself out over this. My question is, if I tested negative for all std's, had a normal pap smear, and 2 crystal clear urinalysis, is it possible for me to have hiv? We only had unprotected sex one time. What are the odds? Someone please respond. Thank you.

Hiv Fear

Unprotected vaginal intercourse is a risk of transmission. However, the risk of becoming infected with hiv after having unprotected vaginal intercourse with someone who has hiv is approx 1-3% per episode (though it is impossible to determine a definate figure). Given then that this occured only once, the odds are in your favour.

However, if you have not actually had an actual hiv test at least three months after the encounter, it is important you have one.

The test is definitive after three months because that is the maximum time known in normal cases for hiv antibodies to be detectable (though this usually happens within six weeks). You can rely on a negative test after three months. No other type of blood test will be able to confirm hiv status.

Try not to worry, it is not likely that you were infected, but do test.
