I just found out that I have 1 in 163
chances of having my baby with down
syndrome. Should I worry? I have to get
a amniocentesis done on tuesday. To tell
you the truth... Im so scared.

To be honest, I would be worried too. But
there is a 162 in 163 chance that he/she
won't be. Try to look at it that way.
Good luck. I have faith he/she will be a
normal healthy baby!

Hi there! I understand what a scary
situation this can be! I was in your
shoes with my daughter, my second born
child, I had a lot of troubles with my
pregnancies with miscarriages then I
really got lucky and my son was born
weighing 10pounds 2ounces after giving up
on getting pregnant and then we had the
scare with our daughter with the drs
saying she would be born with downs
syndrome and I cried and cried and at
that time, I was working at a state
hospital with mentally challenged or
special at that time they called them
retarded children and then, I decided that
I was going to think and be positive, my
daughter did not have downs syndrome she
is a young adult now. Sshe has two years
of college down, almost three and even if
she did have ddowns syndrome, I would not
have loved her any less, I would have
taken care of her. You have some good
odds and try to be positive thinking that
the baby to be does not have downs and if
he/she does you will deal with it when the
time comes.
The best to you and yours!
Please keep us posted on what you find out
and feel free to vent or talk anytime!

i understand what you are going through I
have a 1 in 100 chance...Its very scary I
am overdue, I try not to worry about it
because itsa 99% chance that she wont
be...But that 1% chance is still there.
Atleast your risk is less then mine, it
most likely wont happen and worrying does
more damage to the baby. I like to think
of it as there are soo many worse things
to have go wrong with your baby now a
days. I mean it really sucks if it
happens because all anyone wants is for
their child to be born healthy and happy
and have a "normal" life. But people with
down syndrome are so loving, and they
still have very full lives, they can live
on their own (or ina group based housing)
they have jobs and go to school. I wish
you the best of luck.

If you don't mind me asking, what are the
doctors basing your risk factor on? The
afp test? If so, I know quite a few
people who had positive screenings and
none of them had children with downs. I
can relate to how nervous you are.
Pregnancy is a scary time of feeling out
of control........Let us know how your
amnio goes. How far along are you?
I had a routine medical ultrasound done at
19 weeks and they measure the back of the
neck and there is this nucal fold there,
that gets smaller as the baby grows bigger
(its not accurate to test after 20 weeks)
but mine measured too big...Which is
associated with downs. It is not 100% and
they said so themselves that there have
been a lot of misdiagnosis but it still
lowers my risk to having a down syndrome
baby. I try not to worry about it too
much because it most likely wont happen,
but it's still scary.
