Dry Eye - Please Help

Hi
i have worn contact lenses for about 7
years with no problems. 5 months ago I
started having problems, red eye
irritation etc and 3 months later and
hundreds of tests, the hospital said it
was fine to wear them but I have dry eye
and gave me some artificial tears.
They worked whilst I was using them but
not they have run out. Ive tried
artificial tears from the chemist but they
are rubbish.
Im at my wits end. Each day I have to
wear glasses because my eyes are dry and I
blink all the time. I dont understand
what has caused this, im only 36 years
old.
Does anybody else have this problem and if
yes, what are you experiences. And what
have you used to help.
Please help
thanks

I wore contacts for about the same amount
of time when I was a teen, i'm a year
older than u now.
Anyway... I can only tell u my
experiences with the mysterious supposed
"dry eye" as doctors call it. I have the
same problems and pain u have... One
doctor said I had iritis and gave me
steriod drops. Ohhhhh... That was
better than chocolate (u know what I
mean), it took away the pain! It still
comes back once in a while but the drops
fix it but they make my pupils big and
even more light sensitive... But the pain
is gone!
You cannot wear contacts while on those
drops tho.
Anyway... Ask about it next time. It is
an infection of the eye basically.

Try increasing you intake of omega 3
acids. One easy way to do this is to eat
tuna 5 days a week. Google it. It
helped me with my dry eye symptoms and
helped rid my eye of infections caused by
blepharitis. Takes a while to see
results though, so be patient.

Many thanks for your help.
Is it just tuna mainly that is good for
it. Not too keen on that but makerel and
salmon are good. Im also taking omega
3,6 and 9 vitamin tablets but guess they
will take a while to work too.
Thanks

Hey man, i've heard that tuna has the
highest amount of omega 3 of all the fish.
Maybe you won't need it since you're
taking the omega 3 supplements, but then
again you might lose some of the natural
benefits of eating actual food that
contains it.
I didn't like the taste of tuna either,
but it's grown on me. Just cover up the
taste with pepper or other condiments. I
prefer honey mustard.
But anyways good luck.

Be careful eating too much tuna, I got
extremely sick one time eating to much of
it as you can get gold poisoning.
Puritan's pride has the 3-6-9 oil capsules
(fish, flax and borage oil) and I used to
work for a lady who used aand swore by the
occulite(sp) by bausch&laumb(sp) med
that helped her and it was otc. But I use
the artificial tears and when my eyes do
get infected I get a prescription.
Good luck!

Sandyallen, i'm not saying you're not
telling the truth, but can you provide a
link that explains what you're claiming?
I did a quick search on google for "tuna
gold poisoning" and came up with some hits
for mercury poisoning, but not gold. I'm
pretty sure there would be a greater
outcry if it was that dangerous. Some
bodybuilders eat tuna religiously,
multiple times a day every day for the low
fat protein. And obviously, they aren't
dead or unhealthy.

Thanks guys for your help.
I stupidly just went out and bought a load
of tinned tuna, then read on a website
that tinned tuna is no good and its fresh
tuna only - doh! I guess the cat will be
happy anyway :-(
ive also just read that foods rich in
carbs like pasta, rice, potatoes are not
good for dry eye either! Oh my goodness
I love these!
Have you guys heard of this and if its
true, any suggestions as to what to eat
with all this fish going on in my life
now!
I cant believe this is happening to me!
Where's this come from?
Moving to the med in 3 weeks but its
taking it outta me all this dry eye stuff
and im not excited at all now
thanks

Hi guys
not sure if im posting in the right bit or
not but just thought I would tell you
about some drops I got from the hospital
(doc can prescribe too though) and they
were brilliant.
Ive tried about 8 or 9 over the counter
ones and they are just not good enough.
But when I had my eyes checked in december
at the hospital the guy gave me these.
You can use them with lenses too
they are called celluvisc. Individual
packets which you tear off and then throw
away after use.
Cheers

and it helps , it really does ...
Give it a while to take effect (a week or
more) ... Hope it benefits you too ...

Hi:
I had this same problem (dry eyes). I was
taking 1000 mg of vitamin C at that time.
When I stopped taking vitamin C my problem
almost disappeared (just in case you are
taking Vit C) stop taking it and see what
happened.
Omega 3 helps a lot also!!
Good luck

Kind of reviving a dormant topic here but
I didn't see much on dry eye recently and
this is my personal hot button so I'm
going to post in this thread... follow-up
to the tuna debates.
Dry eye is usually not about being "dry",
unless it's associated with auto-immune
disease or a rare cause where the lacrimal
(moisture-producing) glands are affected.
Dry eye is about anything and everything
that goes wrong with the tear film, which
is made of a lot of substances.
Commonly, dry eye symptoms are caused by
the meibomian (oil) glands in the upper
and lower eyelids not producing enough
oil, or the oil becoming thick and hard in
the glands rather than flowing into the
tear film. This oil is what keeps your
tears from evaporating too quickly. CARE
OF THE OIL GLANDS is essential to keeping
your glands healthy.
That's why tuna and omega 3 supplements
are the rage. They are supposed to fight
inflammation in the meibomian glands.
But Omega 3 does not work for everyone.
Improving meibomian gland function may
involve:
- Omega 3
- Warm compresses (hot washloth, rice
baggy, etc)
- Oral antibiotics
- Lid hygiene if it's related to
blepharitis
Anyone who has dry eye that is, or is
becoming, chronic needs to learn about the
causes and types of dry eye. DON'T JUST
KEEP PUTTING EYEDROPS IN YOUR EYES. Find
out what the cause is and get it treated
properly. There are many pitfalls in dry
eye treatment - both when you're trying to
handle it on your own, and when you're
seeing doctors who are not dry eye
specialists. I find it very sad that so
many people treat it wrong until it has
progressed to the point from which it may
not be reversible.
I highly recommend Dr. Latkany's book The
Dry Eye Remedy. It does a terrific job of
explaining the real causes of dry eye and
practical things you can do for prevention
and care. It's available from all the
usual places and it's a great investment
for anyone with dry eye.
