My newborn son was born on christmas day
and is still in neonatal intensive care
unit. He had blood and mucus in his
stool, elevated crp test (13) which we are
told indicates infection/inflammation,
fever of 101 at 24 hours of age but
dropped when put on ampicillin/genomicin.
The fever and crp are now normal and
there is no blood visible to the eye but
it is still present when stool is tested
at the lab. The doctors checked for anal
fissures and originally thought there was
evidence of some but upon closer
inspection ruled them out. X-ray of the
gut is fine. Baby was breastfed
originally, then starved for 48 hours to
clean it out, then nutramigen formula and
now breastmilk again (all clinical trials
I guess). Baby is otherwise completely
fine (eats, sleeps, fusses for food when
it's time) but he can't come home until
the traces of blood in his stool are gone.
Can anyone make sense of this? I am
not interested in putting my 1-week old
through invasive gi procedures if I don't
have to but that's what is next

I hope that all these problems are now
resolved & your son is home with you,
but if not get other opinions, also go to
search engines & look for alternate
causes of these symptoms another
suggestion would be to email/phone
teaching/research hospitals & see what
they say, I know this has worked for
others in other situations.
My prayers are with you & your son.

I'm sorry to hear that you are going
through this, and I know you are missing
him like crazy. I wasn't able to see my
1st son for 24 hrs, and I thought I was
going to burst...Then my 2nd son (3rd
child) I wasn't able to see for 6
days...And I cried constantly. I hope
all is well with him and that the traces
of blood have subsided. You and your son
will remain in my prayers. Please let us
know how everything is going.
