:?:
ok...This is my first post here! Hello
everyone!
I am 33 weeks pregnant with my second
baby....Another girl....But that's what we
wanted.
I have had some strange cravings. I had
them with my first one, madison, but
didn't think much about it. Ok....They
aren't for anything to eat really....But
smells!!! Like the following...
Gas (or anything about a car...And who
cares how a running car smells but I
did....The tires...Just the way the car
smelled after you drove it)
amonia (gross right)
lysol (spelling?)
windex
any kind of spray for dusting
bleach
i did have a few food cravings....I
normally loved chicken...Couldn't eat
it....And normally didn't care for
steak...Loved it....Salt....Lots and lots
of salt!
So.....Here I am 8 months pregnant and
it's starting again. Not as early as it
did with my first though. Some say it's
a vitimain problem (didn't remember to
take it really well at the end of my
pregnancy with #1 and did good with #2 up
until the last month). Anyone else with
this problem?
Oh with #2 though....Not as much salt
craving, but love the smell of paint!
Can eat more chicken though...Would rather
steak.....Other than that....Pretty much
the same.
Let me know what you did or if you had any
of these!
Thanks.....
Ladonna!
#1 madison lee-10-30-02
#2 taylor anne-due out.....04-19 or 04-25
(schedualed for induction one of these
days!)

I know what you mean about he gas smell
and the paint smell. Wonderful smells.
I do like salty foods but I really dont'
eat them because of my hypertension I had
with my last pregnancy.....
I love chicken....My poor hubby is tired
of it....Sick of it to say the least...I
have to cook him steak or pork while I eat
chicken.....And oranges. Oranges kept me
from throwing up during the first
trimester....And I still eat them
i also crave milk.....Lots and lots of
milk about a gallon and a half a
day....Almost.
Oh and a new thing mint choco chip
icecream from baskins robins. I don't
care for minty stuff...But it hits the
spot. I tried almost all 31 flavors
before I found the one that hit's the spot
just right. Two scoops and I am good to
go. Yummy

I'm glad to hear i'm not the only one!
Normally smells like this I could care
less about....But drive me crazy right
now! Have either of you heard what
causes the "funny" one's? Like I
said...I heard vitimains.....Usually low
iron...But that was fine last time it was
checked. And pica....But usually stems
from low iron. Heard anything else?

Ok found it.. It's called pica
cravings for non-foods
many women experience food cravings or
changes in food likes and dislikes. It is
well known that some women go off coffee
or alcohol, while others may develop the
need to eat large amounts of chocolate,
for example. However, some women
experience a more serious problem: wanting
to eat things that aren't foodstuffs at
all. This eating disorder is known as
pica and the name comes from the latin
word for the magpie, a bird well known for
its tendency to eat almost anything it
finds.
People with pica crave things as diverse
as dirt, clay, paint, chalk, cigarette
ash, ice, baking powder, sand, toothpaste
and even broken crockery.4,5 in pregnancy
it is not known why some women develop it.
However, some doctors believe that it may
be the way that some women's bodies obtain
the minerals or elements they need.4,5 one
study found that women who developed pica
during pregnancy were more likely to be
anaemic due to iron deficiency.5,6 pica is
probably more common among women who have
exhibited pica previously or in
childhood.4,7

so that's why the doc said I could go off
my iron supp and just take the prenatal.
I thought that it was weird that my level
went up....
As far as the pica thing is concerned, I
have had the ice thing and wood
pencils/other wood items. I didn't think
the pencils were anything important bcos I
don't really want to eat them, I just want
to chew them up. Then I spit them out
and chew another. I thought maybe it
would qualify bcos i've never chewed
pencils before.
My mom ate starch (the kind you iron with)
through all 3 of her pregnancies.

I was lucky I just craved edible stuff,
chinese food, tomatoes and grapes were the
biggies for me. My girlfriend who was
preggers at the same time had a thing for
vinegar. She loved the smell of vinegar
and would clean her house daily with a
vinegar based spray just to get that
vinegar scent fix. The obssession with
vinegar ended after her baby was born but
every time I smell vinegar to this day I
think of her.

Yikes! I've not yet been preggo...But I
would be afraid of what these fumes might
do to the baby??? Bleach?? Paint?? I
really hope that you don't actually make
an effort to smell these things (like
sniffing them). Sure it's normal to enjoy
different flavors and smells (makes sense
'cause our sense of smell is connected to
taste...Just try to eat something while
holding your nose...You barely taste it).
But...I would play it safe and try to
avoid chemicals and things that could have
a negative effect on your baby.

ice?? I have a hard time believing that
this is so uncommon! I've been really
dehydrated and craved ice like it were my
favorite meal. It's basically like
craving water...Only the much colder kind.
Lol! It's also a great little snack on a
really hot day. Crushed ice...Yum. Lol!
Anyway...Maybe they consider it part of
pica...But it's no where near clay, paint
and other such oddities.

Although ice is good...It's not good for
your teeth at all!!! It can do as much
damage as lemons to the enamel.
Has anyone experienced bleeding gums or
had swelling of the gums? Has anyone
gotten their teeth cleaned during their
pregnancy?
I ask this cuz my mom's a dental hygentist
and i've been advised that gum disease
could harm your baby. If you're gums are
becoming swollen and painful, call your
dentist.
My gums started to swell over my back
teeth and bled when I brushed. Flossing
is also very very important while you're
preggy. Listerine, or the crest oral
health (no burn) antiseptics are a
neccesity.

Funny...If ice were all that bad for your
teeth...Why would the hospital offer it so
much?? I've been in the hospital a lot
because of .I.B.S. I get it so bad when
i'm really upset and I can end up vomiting
every couple hours for days. The only
thing that stops it is gravol. Once the
vomiting stops...They give me a cup of
crushed ice. I've also seen this a lot in
women who are in hospital hours before
labour. I watch 'a baby story' on .T.L.C
and 'birth stories' on 'discovery health
channel'. I imagine they give them the
crushed ice 'cause they can't eat in case
a c section is needed (this is just a
guess 'cause i've never been there
myself). I can see how taking a whole ice
cube and trying to crush it with your
teeth could do serious damage...But
crushed ice?? I can't see the harm.

yeah...It's been a long time since i've
had an episode that severe. It would
start by me bringing up lots of foamy
acidy bile (sorry - tmi) and then just get
worse from there. I was living in a
.V.E.R.Y stressful house at the time.
Thank god my fiancee and I are on our own
again and it's been almost a year since
i've been sick from it. Had it since I
was very young though. My mom and step
father would come home drunk and
fighting...I'd be so scared and upset that
I would have to run to the bathroom with
cramps! Been with me ever since! :(
thanks for the tip though. :)

With crushed ice you'd seriously have to
be addicted to it. It's tecture is waay
softer than the half cubes..You know, the
ones that look like a crescent moon. They
give em ice just in case of a c - section,
your right. I guess they don't their
bellies/bladder to be extreemly full in
case an operation is needed. Kinda like
why you're not allowed to eat or drink
after mid night when you have surgery the
next day.

i've been to the dentist for my cleanings,
and also to have a cavity filled in the
first trimester. Wanted to get it out of
the way before I got as big and as tired
as I am now. Taking good care of my
teeth bcos dentist said pregnant woman are
more susceptible to gingivitis. So i'm
brushing, flossing and using cool mint
listerine to keep everything in good
order.

got preggo bcos I thought it interesting.
Now that I would love to watch it, I
