Sciatic Nerve Pain?
Posted: 03-17-06 11:40am

Seems like i'm afraid everything is related to my pregnancy lately. Lol.

Anyway, yesterday, my right leg started hurting (and still does today). It's in the hip area... Almost like it's the joint or something. I thought maybe i'd slept weird the night before, but it still hurts, and I can't figure out where the heck it came from.

I've read there are certain sitting positions that aren't the best for when you're pregnant, so I thought maybe I was sitting wrong, too?

I don't know, it could just be something random, too. Does anyone have any ideas?

That sounds like your siatic (i know I spelled it wrong, but at least that's how it's pronounced) nerve. I had a lot of pain with mine in my second trimester and there isn't much you can do about it. I tired to use a heating pad on my leg and that helped a little bit at one point, but even after awhile that didn't work. Mine was in my left leg and it hurt a lot. I asked my doctor about it and she basically said it was only going to get worse as the baby gets bigger. Tylenol won't work because it's a nerve your baby is sitting on. To my surprise shortly after I entered third trimester my pain went away. It will come and go too....Normally. Mine did at first then it stayed!!! Then went away for good. So I hope that answered your question somewhat. Sorry if it's confusing :p

Actually, that makes total sense. Lol

and thanks for replying. I can deal with that. I guess I just wanted to make sure a) it wasn't something hurting the baby and b) I wasn't doing something wrong (sitting, sleeping, etc.)

i do go to the doctor again monday, so i'll ask them as well. Thanks again! :)

Your welcome.
Hang in there you could be in for a long ride! I've heard some people still have that pain after the baby is born, I couldn't imagine living with the pain! I don't think that's common tho. It's supposed to go away. Good luck at the doctors!
I have to go in 2 weeks :(

I just went 2 weeks ago, but I have to go again cause my blood pressure was high last time. (i have no idea what it was, but they said it wasn't dangerously high, just high enough for them to want to monitor it and maybe get me on something if it doesn't go down.) but i'm not worried about that... At least I can control it.

I'm hoping to turn the visit into something really good and get them to do an u/s so I can find out the sex. :d

and, oh my, I hope it goes away. Lol. I'd hate to have it forever! :p

I had that. In my right hip too. My doc said sciatic was a poss also that it could be bcos pregnancy softens muscles and makes you more prone to stress injuries. Hence the rules on weight training while preggo if you haven't been already...

I had my son and im still getting it, could be sciatic, arthritis or just the fact that hormones are playing games with you(hormones in the end of pregnancy start to loosen up all ur joints, muscles ect down below.) I cant sleep on my right side or im in terrible hip pain now the weather change also makes it worse if ur really worried go see a dr!

I had sciatic nerve pain from the time I was 9 weeks pregnant until I was 41+ weeks :( my doctor sent me to physical therapy and I wore I pregnancy belt around my lower back. I don't know if it helped - but I didn't want to find out if the pain could get any worse.

The doctor said the only 'cure' for it was birth. Within the first week of having my daughter, I was pain free for the first time in what felt like forever.

I hope the same works for you! Good luck.

How far along are you?

My angel started putting pressure on my sciatic nerve at 12 weeks and didn't let up until about 25 weeks. So I had to deal with that pain for a long long time. It's actually very common in pregnancies just because of the baby relaxing directly on it. Knee to chest lifts are suggested (although they hurt like hell) and moist heat. The .Dr told me that the only way it goes away is when the baby finally lifts him/herself off of it. After the baby lifts, it's all a game of when he/ she feels like sitting on it...Kinda like your bladder.

You were right about the tylenol issue, don't even bother, it's a nerve. I mean the pain is immense and unbearable. I was working in a spa when mine started giving me trouble and it was soooo hard to not shreek when it lifted my left foot. It's the most horrible pain i've ever experienced!!! My fiance was wanted to rub it but it was unrubbable!! Lol...

Good luck yall!!

I'm just a little over 19 weeks.

I keep trying to convince the lil bugger to move over. Hehe. But I don't think it's working.

What I used to do was lay with my body on my bed, and my head on my floor...It was as close as I could get to a hand stand. But as soon as you stand up, it'll rest right back on it!!

also, my leg feels much better today. Either he/she moved, or it was something else. *shrug*

Oh! I can't wait for you to find out what it is! I hope they can tell you. It's so exciting to find out what your having. That's when the fun begins and you get to go shopping. Well....Ok, *i* didn't get to do much shopping because my mom hit all the stores as soon as she found out, as did a few other people. Which is fine because it saved us a ton of money and they picked out super cute clothes. Too bad her 0-3 months won't fit long lol. But that's ok because we've got clothes for her up to 24 months. Adriana goes to the doctor tomorrow. Her pediatrician wants to check to see how her jaundice is doing. My husband calls her his little yellow tamale! Anywho good luck and I hope you find out what your little one is!

I was jaundiced when I was born. My mom never really told me much about it other than I was in the hospital for a while. I did see on "a baby story" once where a couple had a baby who had jaundice and they had to use this weird heated blanket thing (i know, my amazing technical knowlege astounds you). Did you have to do anything like that?

Bf told his mom the other day we might "find out what it is," and she said, "don't say that. It's not an it." he said, "you do realize what you just said, right? Lol

While I was in the hospital they had a channel on that was all about newborn babies and such, and they said jaundice is very common in newborns...It's just how bad does she have it. Her pediatrician said he wasn't worried about it, and said it's common (as did the baby channel) he also heard a heart murmur tuesday when he checked her, on a scale of 0-6 she rated a 1. But he said that is also common in almost all newborn, but once they are more than 24 hours old it goes away. Hers did, because wednesday and thursday he didn't hear anything and said she looks very healthy.

That's funny about your bf's mother. I feel funny saying "it" but what else do you say when you don't know? Lol I called mine it until I knew.
