How the Hell Do You Control Your Eating?
Posted: 03-22-06 17:33pm

I used to be anorexic and bulimic during my mid teens, stopped when I was about 17. I'm nearly 20 now and I find myself slipping back into bad habits. It's the usual thing.... I think ''oh i'm just having one slice of toast''. But once I start eating... God... I just can't stop. Feels like i've gone through the whole fridge, and I feel so dreadful afterwards. You'd think I would've learnt by now to eat in moderation, but I do this every time. I make myself angry. Just took several laxatives there now, but I dont want to slip back into this sh*t. I just want to be able to moderate what I eat, and eat sensibly so as to control my weight. I just don't seem to have the self discipline....

If anyone's been successful in normalizing their eating habits, please tell me how you did it

hi, fiona.
I'm a bulimic and I had your problem of overeating. I'm now in a process of reeducation of my eating habits (from not eating I jumped to overeating), and i've been able to control myself for a few days.
You have to believe that you can control yourself. Try to tell someone who is a lot of time with you - that person can help you, by telling you that one slice is enough, for example - or write down what you eat (and share it with us, for example)...
I never used lax, but I used to throw up. I'm afraid of gaining weight, but I know I was hurting people who love me the most and who I trully love by doing that...
Try to establish, for example, what you'll eat in a day. And other things that can help can be having hobbies to spend your time or thinking and doing other thinks when you aren't hungry but you fell like you will overeat - read a book, do the crosswords, come to the msn chat, draw, something you like!

I'm with you, if you need help, just call me...
I also need help.

I'd thought a way of helping me would be to tell my mum to only bring certain foods into the house, and not to let me snack much between meals, but noone can be there 24/7. I remember the lengths I went to get chocolatey things back in the old days... If somebody tells you you can't have something it just makes you all the more determined to get it. It becomes so obsessive.

I dont wanna tell her cos the last thing I want is to hurt my mum all over again. And I know if I tell her it's gonna be the sympathetic looks, and the "don't you think you've had enough to eat now, sweetheart?" and as soon as those words come out it's like the affirmation... And I feel guilty. I dont think I wanna tell her I need help. Instead maybe i'll do what you suggested... Make a list? Or maybe plan everything I can eat in a day.

Is that what you do? Do you make a list?

I find sometimes it helps if i'm about to get a snack, to instead make a cup of tea. Sometimes thirst is mistaken for hunger.

Thanks for replying... Jeez I think i'm going to go insane sometimes. It helps to tell someone about it!

Sometimes, I make a list.
Right now, i'm making one, I started on monday. Having things written down helps you to get a better consciousness about what you've really eaten.
I write hour and then what i've eaten in my agenda. And I always carry it with me. It's also good to always keep it wherever you go, because you can write things down whenever you want or read what you've already written.
For example, on today's page i've got:

9:00 - 1 breat with ham, 1 cup of milk, 1 banana.

And remember - drink a lot of water :) it not only helps you to reduce your will to eat as it helps you body to work!

That's What I'm Gonna Do
Posted: 03-23-06 08:24am

I used to do it years ago when I was anorexic/bulimic, to keep a note of what I was eating. I think back then it made it worse cos you don't realise how much you're eating till you see it itemized like that. I used this list as a means of recording it, so that I could eat as little as possible. Now I want to use it for better means, so I can eat sensibly, healthily and normally.

I'm gonna give it a try:)

Weel, you can try to do it in a positive way. Instead of look ing at it and feel guilty, try to think and racionalize what you've written.
I know exactly how you feel and what comes into your mind when you first read it. I took me a long time to change this way, but now I write it down because I wanna change. Last year, for instance, I used to do it for a time, but just because I didn't want to eat at all - so i'd blame myself for every single thing I had written.
Now, it's different. For exemple, i've established with myself that i'd only eat chocolate once a week (meaning cakes and that bad stuff). So, with this agenda, I know preciselly when I ate chocolate and what i've eaten. This a way to control myself...

Last few days i've been eating fairly sensibly. A couple of silly mistakes, but i'll forgive myself for them. Been eating healthy breakfasts... Nothing too stodgy cos that just seems to set me up badly for the rest of the day. Drinking a lot, cos often I think I must mistake thirst for hunger. Been trying to put off eating until mealtimes, and if I do snack in between, it'll be a small, healthy snack instead. I find it difficult to believe I can change a lifetime's bad habits, but i'm gonna give it a good shot anyway. About 7 months ago I was eating great, but somehow I slipped back into old habits. I'll try not to let this happen again. How's things with you?

that is great, i'm very happy for you. Yesterday and on saturday I vomited again... After 17 zero days! :( today I haven't, it's being a zero day again for me. But, in the morning, i've eaten chocolate and then I felt all the guilt all over again. I was almost going to the bathroom and throw up, but I managed not to... I didn't want to make things worse for me today.
I've just got home from college and had my lunch now. Now i'm gonna work to a project i'm into.
How has your day gone by?

I suppose when I go to eat chocolate... What i'm thinking at the time is ''i'm allowed to treat myself... I don't want to deny myself something I like because I want to conform to body ideals!!" and every part of my brain is screaming that. So I have it. But the thing is, I know myself too well now. Some people are able to have a chocolate bar and take it in their stride. I however, am not. And I know this. I know I have never felt good after eating one! So I just bear this in mind every time I think about having one. I'm not being cruel to myself. On the contrary, I know i'm making things easier for myself.

Maybe whenever you have a chocolate craving, try having a really small one instead, just to satisfy the taste. Like a celebration or a cadbury's hero. They don't make you feel so bad!

Ok, you've had a relapse, but it's ok, forgive yourself that. Don't let yourself think you've failed. You're making progress, it's cool.

Every morning I usually have a cooked breakfast, like an egg on toast or a fry up, but I find it sets me up badly for the day. I find it helps to eat a healthy low fat breakfast, such as cereal. That way I feel more positive in the day that i'm eating sensibly. Whereas if I eat a pile of sh*te, I tend to think ''oh, i've failed already, so there's no point in trying to eat healthy the rest of the day''. Try eating meusli or cereal of some sort, it helps me feel better.

Sorry, i'm being really cr*p at conveying stuff today, hope that made sense! Lol

It's ok! I find really cool that you are managing to get healthy again too!
And I don't really love chocolate :s it's something I like, ok, but it's not one of my favourite things.

I promised myself that today I won't make that crap again and i'll eat good stuff as I can. It's gonna be a bit hard, because i'm at college already and will be here till 7 or 7:30 in the evening. We have a cafetaria here, but there's only croissants and stuff like that :\ then, we have those machines with cakes, cookies, chocolates and bad stuff. The only places left are coffeeshops! :s

well, i've eaten a non-fat youghurt for breakfast at 7:20. Let's see what the rest of the day reserves.

I hope your day is fine, have fun :) thanks for sharing your experience with me =) *****

Hey yas

hows it been going with youse?

Not so great with me. Well... On and off.

I've been trying to regulate my eating, control it, but it's been very hard. I value food alot. I've been off university this week so all this sitting about, all this boredom has lead to overeating once again. My boyfriend was over last night and gave me an easter egg. It's a huge one. You know russian dolls? It's like that only it's an egg inside an egg inside an egg. I've already had almost the whole thing. The first thing I did when I woke up thismorning was reach for a chunk. How do I always forget how I can't take food casually? Had a few laxatives. Goddamn. I'll throw the rest of this thing out. Feel bad. It was a present....

I suppose what it comes down to is there isn't really any one to support me, to tell me not to eat when I shouldnt be.

Fiona, don't feel so bad about it.
You're trying to control yourself and that is hugelly hard, we all know it. I'm also off from university now and until next tuesday (classes begin on wednesday), so I know how it's all about. Besides, it's a holiday season which makes things worse...

I've had a few zero days, five in a row now. I'm trying to control myself too, but it's overwealming. Easter is all about the candies, which makes me sick :\ but i'm trying to keep up to what my doctor said to me when I last went there. She said I had three goals to achieve:
1. Keep the breaks between the meals (about 3 hours of interval between them) - to avoid being eating everytime,
2. Always have lunch (which I don't usually have, specially when i'm at the university - at home I must have it, because my family is generally around and I don't want to be any more suspicious),
3. Not weighting myself too frequently - only once a week, she said (i still do it a lot more often, but, this week, I managed to be one whole day without weighting).

This month, I managed to have 14 zero days in a row, but one day I was weaker and threw my lunch out... :(
i hope I can find my way out of this. I'm still way to scared of gaining weight and getting fatter, but I want a regular life, without a major concern about these subjects and, most of all, without an ed.

But enough of me, how are you doing?

Another way is by drinking extra water which was reccommended to you earlier, which I do anyway as water is filling but do not over do that either but especially do not try to vommit(sp).
Again, the best to you!

I drink a lot of water, generally 3 liters a day (3 liter = 0.792 516 154 gallon [us, liquid]). And you? Since I started drinking more water, some years ago, I noticed that I lost body fat, weight and that my skin is a lot better. It's still dry skin type, but it used to be awful :x

Stop the Hunger!
Posted: 04-19-06 08:05am

Hello

i too am bulimic, and was sent to a nutritionist about 2 years ago. She really helped me realise just what foods were okay to have and how much I could have without gaining any weight!

It worked on portions:
1 serve dairy = 1 cup low fat milk, 1 tub low fat yoghurt or 1 slice low fat cheese

1 serve cereal = 1 slice bread (multigrain/wholemeal best), 1/2 cup cooked rice, 1/2 cup cooked pasta, 1/2 muffin, 1 crumpet, 1 small potato or 1/2 cup breakfast cereal etc

1 serve protein = 50g chicken, 50g lean beef, 12 nuts, 50g tofu, 100g fish, 1 cup prawns, 3/4 cup baked beans or lentils etc

1 serve fruit = 1 banana, 1 apple, 3 apricots, 1 punnet of strawberries, 2 slices melon etc

*vegetables are unlimited at any time of the day!! They keep your water & fibre levels up

1 serve extras = 1 glass alcohol, 50g chocolate bar, 1 cream biscuit, 50g potato chips etc

basically the way it works is she allowed a certain serve of particular food types for each meal, and I was allowed to choose what I felt like as long as I stuck to the serving size...

Breakfast: 2 serves cereal + 1 serve dairy eg 2 slices toast + tub of yoghurt or 1 cup breakfast cereal with 1 cup milk or 1 muffin + a skim late etc

lunch: 2 serves cereal + vegetables + 1 serve protein *protein important at this time of the day as it reduces hunger levels mid afternoon eg 1 ham & salad sandwich or slices of chicken with a potato salad or pasta with tofu and salad etc

dinner: 0 - 1 serve cereal + vegetables + 2 serves protein eg 100g beef with salad or grilled fish and steamed vegies etc ... Its a good idea to reduce your cereal intake at dinner time as they contain carbs and because your body will be sleeping in a few hours its not a good idea to be consuming these so late.

You are allowed 2 snacks a day, plus one extra every 2 days... So treat yourself every once in a while with a glass of wine or a cookie or chocolate and you will find these cravings will disappear and no weight will be gained.

I tried this out when I was very sick and on medication, and my muscles toned up without me even working out because I was feeding them the right nutrients. Plus I wasnt hungry ever :d

i hope I have helped a bit...

Hi again

i did feel excellent for a long time after I started the eating plan, however I am still going through a tough rollercoaster because of a number of factors to do with alcohol and medication, so I do throw up still, maybe once or twice a day? However I do my best to make sure that I have at least three small meals a day - so sometimes I will binge and throw up but then will make sure I have a proper meal afterwards. Its strange... I do need help still, I hate throwing up.

I thought this eating advice would help some of you to realise how much is a "normal" amount to eat each day without having to worry about weight gain :)
