Have any of you had one? I did the blood screening test the other day for down syndrome and something else, but I haven't gotten the results back yet. The doctor said that if the screening test shows something, they will check it "either by ultrasound or amniocentesis." he didn't really explain other than that. But it really, seriously freaks me out to think of having to have one.

And would it make a difference? I mean, would they do anything differently if an amnio showed something? It's not like i'd want to terminate or anything just because I found out my baby had a disability.

This could all be very moot since a) I don't have results yet and b) I don't know if they'd even do one anyway. But it's just scary. Lol

You don't have to have further testing if the downs markers are present - if your choice is not to terminate.

Are you at high risk for giving birth to a downs syndrome baby?

This really is something you should talk to your doctor about. Remember you do have the right to refuse testing, or ask for further testing, if that is your choice.

Good luck. Waiting is always the hardest part of just about anything.

No, i'm not at high risk. It was really weird that they suggested it, I thought. My doc said they are legally required to recommend it. My bf said, "legality aside, would you recommend it?" he said, "yeah, it can't hurt." so we did it.

I don't know, I guess I just started thinking about a big needle into my stomach... Ew. Lol

Just like ingi said amnio is done if you don't reach the cutoff number with downs and if a prego woman still decides to continue pregnancy despite being on high risk then they would suggest cvs or amnio which both have 2% chance of miscarriage. I know what you mean tho bout feeling a bit weird coz you got offered blood screening but everyone's offered with it anyway so dont worry. Everything would prob turn out fine.
I was a nervous reck when they started doing all this blood screening business on me but turned out i'm worrying out of nothing (still a worry wort tho lol).
Good luck

I think the percentage of miscarriage is higher than 2%....I'm not sure how high it is, but it can be dangerous.

What state are you in where it is legally mandatory??? In .Louisiana it was my decision. My .Dr said that these results normally come back abnormal and cause a scare and the baby winds up fine w/ no problems.

Let us know the results.....And you decision on doing the amnio.

I refused to get the blood work done, we have a lot of genetic disorders in our family my father has muscular dystrophy and my sister has cerebal palsy , the dr if there is something wrong they could terminate it so I said screw the bloodwork!!

You dont need amnio there is a risk with it like any surgical procedure, just understand that if you feel uncapable of taking care of a special needs child there is always families that will take them!! Best of luck on your decision!

Like I said, I would never terminate. In my opinion, it's not fair. A child does not ask to have a disability, and I think it's selfish to terminate a pregnancy because of a disability. At least give the kid a chance with another family.. But give him/her a chance, nonetheless.

Anyway, babymajic, it's not legally mandatory that I have the screening done, it's legally mandatory for the doctor to suggest it. At least that's what I was told. Either way, I know I don't .H.A.V.E to have it done. And i'm in south carolina.

Bf said we ought to do it since it was covered by insurance, so we did. I joked that he only wanted to do it cause it was my arm they were sticking the needle in, not his. Lol. But now I sorta wish I hadn't done it. I mean, like I said, the results will do nothing but worry me if they're positive. Dangit! Lol well, it's done now. *shrug* we'll see what happens.

Thanks for the replies, as always!!!

I just wanted to say that I had an amnio done with my little skoot that passed away and they told me that he had downs by looking at the us but when the test was completed he was just fine.

I have also had two friends that had the test done and they told them that their babys had it too and nothing was wrong with their babies. The test is not 100% accrate by any means
