Hida Scan - Not Recommended Posted: 03-25-06 11:57am
Hey ya'll,
i had an abdominal ultrasound done in
september when I was experiencing naseau
and abdominal discomfort. It was found
that I had small gallstones (nothing
'earth shattering'), no thickening of the
gallbladder wall, and kidneys and liver
were good.
I then had an endoscopy and it was
revealed that I had a small hiatal hernia
and reflux, for which I take nexium daily
and have changed my diet to reflect very
low fat.
I've been doing pretty well, but wednesday
night got what I think was a 'gallbladder
attack' - very painful, nothing helped to
ease the pain, hours and hours of agony.
I called my gastroenterologist and he
suggested I get a hida scan done with cck.
I posted this on one of my forum boards
and it was discussed that this is not very
good protocal, as it could actually lodge
a stone in my bile duct and need emergency
surgery, so i've cancelled the appt. For
monday and am going to see a surgeon
specializing in gallbladder (that my mom
used for her surgery years ago).
Has anyone ever heard that this test could
do that?
Thanks,
lori

The hida scan itself is a good test. The
part where they give cck to make the
gallbladder contract (gallbladder ejection
fraction) is the part that could
"potentially" cause you problems if you
have gallstones. Some facilities won't
do the gallbladder ejection fraction if
you have stones. The 1st part of the
hida scan, which will determined if the
cystic duct (the duct to your gallbladder)
is blocked is perfectly safe. You can
have that done. I just wouldn't do the
ejection fraction part. The risk is
small, but real.

Thank you kindly for responding. It
would all make sense. I am going to make
an appt. With a surgeon (who specializes
in gallbladder) to see what he
recommends.
What test is the most accurate for
determining gallbladder function and/or
the multitude of stones?

The best proceedure to evaluate stones is
the ultrasound. For gallbladder
function, nothing beats the hida scan.
No "one test to evaluate it all"
currently exists.
