Why is my Period Irregular after coming off Birth Control? Posted: 03-27-06 15:54pm
I haven't had a regular period since
coming off birth control in June. I've had
std test (all of them) all came back
negative. I had blood sugar test done it
was normal. Thyroid test normal, and a
normal blood count test. So why is it that
I haven't had a normal period. I was alway
on time before birth control. It's 6 wks
since my last period, which was extremely
heavy for 7 days(also not normal for me).
My doctor is confused, and so am I. Is
there anything else I should test for?
One of the expected side effects of birth
control pills is a temporally lack of
ovulation when coming off the pills.
Normal ovulation is usually established
after 6 months. Temporally lack of
ovulations, however, can last up to 2
years. Without ovulation, menstrual cycles
and periods are irregular. If you want to
conceive you can take blood analyses for
pituitary (FSH, LH and prolactin) and
ovarian (estrogen and progesterone)
hormones do establish if you are
ovulating, or not. In this case, an
ovarian ultrasound is also recommended in
looking for ovulation. If the ovulations
have not yet returned spontaneously,
ovulation inductors (clomiphene) can be
used to promote conception.
